safe transmission temp

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by fallen angel » Sun Sep 14, 2014 2:03 am

Having upgraded to 30.5" tires, I've been monitoring my transmission temps as I commute. I find I dont know what a safe transmission temp is. I believe the highest I've seen yet was right around 200deg. Im thinking safe might be to about 215 or so for short periods?

If you get to 225, you're in danger territory and you should consider doing something different to cool the trans. Mine will max out at about 219 in super hot weather, then come back down to settle at around 212. Hotter than I'd like, but it isn't often that it happens.

trans cooler for x-mas I suppose then. I'd love to get better gears in the thing, but don't think it's worth trying to get the front diff done. I'll just have to be gentle.

Nobody ever knows what to get me. If I note that I only need a $30 transmission cooler, done. Saves me moneys to buy a roof carrier

Yeah, I know. Now you could always drive yourself down here to the hudson valley to help out with the lift install to make up for it :friday: going to be SO MUCH FUN doing it with Han tools. I miss my impact gun

When I go to install the cooler, which line is best to tap? From what I've read, it seems the return line is most common.

I like the output line from the transmission, but there are merits to each in my opinion.

i chose the return line so it would get extra cooling. if you choose the other, your xmsn temp will likely mimic your engine temp (to an extent) I live in a hot climate and (at the time of install) I had 33"s on 3.42 hauling lots of weight and needed all the cooling help i could get.
James has a good point too, that putting the cooler before the radiator will help take some stress off the radiator.

Putting the cooler before the radiator will cool well, and will also let the radiator be the last thing that touches your fluid, so the engine can help warm up the transmission in the winter.

Putting the cooler after the radiator will pull the temperature down a little farther than the other way around, but it'll also tend to cause transmission problems from not letting the trans ever get up to operating temperature (160F) and burn the water off in the winter, if you live someplace cold.

I never read it put this way, I will have to change my setup or get a bypass as it seems to run cooler. Just clarify the bottom line is from the transmission.

That's be if your auxiliary cooler didn't auto-bypass when the fluid is cold?
The problem with the Trailblazer is, people think you know what you're doing.

That's correct! if your aux cooler has a thermostatic bypass on it, it's fine whichever way.

I guess I am being a little conscious. The spec's say it has cold weather bypass. Just from watching the temps and feeling the cooler itself I wonder. Maybe I'll just wait until the weather get real cold and monitor the temps.

Anyone have experience with this line of coolers in cold weather?

I know Moots was seeing excessive cooling in the cooler months up here in the arctic tundra we call NY. He ended up installing a thermostat inline and it's worked flawlessly since. It's pretty common to use thermostats inline on road racing/hpde cars, that's where I became aware of it. As Barton pointed out, it's just as detrimental to overcool as it is to undercool.

I did a quick test seeing that I have had a good amount of problems with trans temp and all, my first morning ride from my old house to my new house no traffic cruising on the highway about 60-65 MPH and running 2000-2100 RPMs and 65 F degrees outside I got some readings with the Derale thermostatic bypass. Also to add I have 4.56 gear ratio and 33x11.5 tires on steel wheels

And this is the ride
