Fram

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

Not sure how many of you guys use FRAM oil filters but if you are unaware of it, as i was, they changed the filter for our trucks. used to be 3675 now is 3506. The new filter is shorter and is easier to install/remove.

It changed for the 2004 and older. The 2005 and newer is still 9837 for the oil filter.

Had some cardboard from a Fram filter come out onto the clean side, and destroy a couple of hydraulic valve adjusters and finger followers, and screw up the head on a motorcycle I had... I don't use Fram filters any more.

I'm with Mike. I know there is a debate ongoing about the quality of Fram oil filters, but I've cut apart way too many over the years to ever run them on any of my own stuff. Quality is lacking IMO. I prefer the Mobil 1 filter. Well made piece and has synthetic filter media instead of treated paper.

I am a third person to echo this same thought. If anyone wants to spend a few dollars to waste a couple of filters, cut open a Fram filter and a Mobil 1 filter. I am sure you will be amazed at the difference of the guts. My local Advanced Auto cut open one from each manufacture and had them sitting out on display. It was a real eye opener.

:Iagree: I haven't used Fram since my first car... I have been sticking to Mobil 1 but lately I've been trying the Royal Purple filter and oil.

That's what I use... Every UOA I've had done when using a Pure 1, they've specifically said in the notes; "We don't know what filter you're using, but keep using it. Filtration is excellent!"

The Purolator filters are good.

K&N also makes a filter -- same manufacturer as the Mobil 1 -- the difference is minute, mostly a better can with wrench flats.

Wix (NAPA Gold) are also trusted filters.

I sold filters for a few years and cut open several dozen various part numbers, new and used. Almost all Frams are the same inside, no matter the cost. Cardboard end flaps, thin sheetmetal tension spring for the by-pass, and poor fitment of the rubber valve that is supposed to insure startup pressure. I've heard a number of engines "tick" on cold start w/Frams. Problem went away with another better variety.

But, I'm not trying to tell anyone which filter to run -- only which one I won't run myself. :coffee:

I use a Mobil-1 filter and oil. I am wanting to get the oil analyzed though to see how clean it is. OLM is 50% @ 7,000 miles.

AMSOIL absolute efficiency filter for me...if not that, I like the product WIX makes. Havent had a problem, and they are priced well, and support most makes and models.

I agree... Amsoil is the next step up the ladder. Especially their by-pass systems. Price tends to get out of reach for a lot of folks on a tight budget though. I'm looking at one for my diesel tow rig. Love to see 30K between changes on that.
