but what do you guys think about using a trans cooler off of another gm for my tb. I am parting out a totaled 95 impala ss that was hit hard in the rear. it has the oem trans cooler on it and was thinking of putting it on the tb.

How is that being cheap? I just see it as resourceful. Are you planning to run it in addition to the OEM one? I cant imagine that one being large enough for the demand of our trans. However being an SS maybe it is. Not sure what trans that is but IIRC that's the LT1 motor no? If it can be mounted safely and run in addition i don't see why not. Just a matter of running the lines.

It's a 4l60e tranny and a lt1. It measures about 8x12 and 2" thick.

I was planning on running it through the cooler first then back to the radiator.

take your grill off and measure the area.

Also, no do not run the cooler before the rad. There are many threads on this. Your best bet is to run it in series with the rad, because our rad has a bit in trans cooler, as well as the ability to quickly warm it to a minimum operating temp.

trans -> rad -> aux trans cooler -> trans

Yup ^^^ And, I almost always source my various oil coolers from the salvage yard. Factory offerings are typically better quality than aftermarket (unless you get real spendy) and they are very reasonably priced at places like Pull-A-Part ($5 -$10).

Check some of the Dodge trucks and vans. They had really nice plate coolers. Doesn't have to be a Chevy part unless you are a purist and can only see one brand.

If you start doing a bunch of off-roadig, you may also wish to add a power steering cooler to the system. They can really help if you get to the point where you are twisting and turning hard while working steps.

Ah, my bad. I've seen that and never thought steering cooler. I figured it was an oil cooler for the engine.
