Metallic Rattle - Please help

Something not working right?

by Zero » Sat Sep 12, 2009 9:18 am

Hey guys, recently I have noticed this faint metallic rattle when i make slight turns left or right. its worse when turning left.

i have checked all fluids, gone under the front end and didnt find anything to be loose.
tires are balanced.

im not sure where to begin. I also drive with my windows down while going over some bumps, and nothing rattles. gone outside the truck and given it a shake, again no rattles. grabbed the exhaust, gave it a shake. it moves around a bit. but didnt seem to hit anything.

so please chime in if any of you have any ideas.

The most subtle cause of noises, but more for clunks than rattles, is the screw-height adjustable hood stops. I'd guess brake dust shields for yours. Just bend 'em a tiny bit or see if anything could be touching them like brake lines or ABS wiring harness, and see if the noise changes. Anything fallen down on the skid plate?

Check the flat washers under hood @ top of shock mount. See if they are rattling. Mine were, and I got lucky enough to find it...

I hate to suggest this but if the front bearings are going in the hub assembly, they will make noise when turning. A little at first then louder as they get worse and more noticeable on the side that's going. Just a thought.

Or the CV's too, you can hear them better when the wheels are turned. Mine's that way right now, sounded very "tinny" at first, Now it makes horrible sounds.. Probably should get to fixing that..!!

the sound comes and goes. and is def. a tin sound. i havent checked the washers but i will today. i looked at the cv boots and they are fine. showing no signs of wear. so maybe a trip down to my shop at some point would be a good idea.

***UPDATE***

problem has been found!!

i have checked all the washer and bolts you guys recommended, they are all good and tight. take about 20 min to look around under the truck, taping on things, and it def. is the brake dust shields. i think they are making noise from the vibrations of the super stiff, super aggressive tire since i only get the sounds when going really slow. after taping on them here and there i was able to find the exact sound!! it is right in the damn middle. so im either gona try and tighten them up, slip a rubber bushing in between the shield and hub, possibly remove if need be.

ill keep you guys posted on what i find is the actual long term fix aside from just bending it a tiny bit yesterday.

You could also change the resonant frequency by JBWelding on some weights in the middle of the drum-head areas.
