Steering (Problem Solved)

Something not working right?

by signguy62 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 11:32 am

My steering wheel wobbles/saws back and forth, more pronounced at low speed, decreases as speed increases. and it's pulling to the left. Could this be a tire problem?

Is the wobble synchronous with the tire RPMs?
Does the body roll with the wobbles?
Are you lifted?
Have you ran your hand around the tread of the tire? Be sure to check the interior and exterior of the treads.
Have you looked down at the tire while traveling at a low speed? If there is a belt broken, it can appear that the tire is wobbling.

are your wheels balanced? Have you checked the psi in the tires? When was the last time you had an alignment?

This just started when I removed my 22's and put my stock 17's back on. Alignment was done back in the summer. And the wobble does seem synced with the tire revolution. Will have to look at the tire closer. And not lifted yet, still lowered but on my way to lifting.

Did you have your truck re aligned after the wheel and tire swap? Have you checked the balljoints?

If it was immediately after you changed back, check your front tires to make sure they are seated properly on the hub. You may have a wobbling wheel... potentially very dangerous.

Agreed! Just ask Alex over on the OS.

Welcome to the dark side, Jim. Why the change of heart? :safari:

Been running low for a very long time. First my Silverado and then the TB. Just looking for a change and with all the fire trails/roads around here, I figure I'll have some fun.

Wheel seems to be seated just fine. But I did not have it re-aligned when I took the 22's off. Another thing though, I had to be in work this AM @ 4 and noticed that with the snow covered roads the steering wheel didn't wobble. I still think it's the tire.

Sounds like it could be, have you felt up your tires yet to see if they have any bulges or signs of broken belting like James suggested? Like he was saying, you can hang your head out the window, and a friend out the other side to see if you can see any signs of wobbling...

Yeah, I'll have to take a close look at the tires.

Around here is the Pine Barrens of NJ.

Damn, there are a lot of you Jersey guys... well minus Bot now. What a shame.

But back on topic, that's is a little weird tho that you only get the wobble at lower speeds but, I'm also thinkin' it's the tires or tire.

Yeah, but. When we get there it's ten times more impressive scenery-wise, so it evens out.

Yea, but its okay. We make due with what we have.

Signguy, (Jim?), how were your tires stored?
Often, if a tire is not stored the proper way, it will loose its balancing and or warp a certain way to contour to its surroundings. When the rubber softens due to temp, humidity, moisture etc. it will form around its new low points, causing the actual tire to loose its stability and balance. This could be your issue.

They were stored on their side, stacked 4 high in my shed. But I think I found the problem.......I think its a messed up steel belt. Might have damaged it on a pot hole or something.

(Problem Solved) It was a bad spot on the passenger side front tire.
