Squeaky chassis... where/what to lube?

Something not working right?

by Philberto » Wed Dec 30, 2009 3:28 pm

Hey everybody,

Now I already know that we have non-serviceable chassises/chasses? but I have noticed my vehicle becoming more and more squeaky, particularly when traveling on washboard roads and other rough roads. I have solved my rattle problem (loose ball joint nut) and this makes the squeaking all the more apparent. Can anybody offer me a checklist of areas to grease up/tighten in the hopes of lessening the noise? I don't want my truck to sound like a rattletrap when I drive by people (sort of lessens the opinion of the platform, y'know?). :safari:

Can you hear it when you jump on the front or rear bumpers?

Typically, I get squeaks in the four anti-sway bar bushings, and you have to remove them to add grease inside. Experiment with a WD40 spray first, to see if you can eliminate it for a short while.

And the ever-subtle hood bump stops at the two front corners are more obscure noise sources.

The squeaks are from the undercarriage in front... Once it stops raining, I'll check it out, grease gun in hand.

Bill, have you experienced that with the SMAXX end links as of yet? I have been getting some front end squeaking that I assumed were ball joints. I didn't even think to check the end links or bushings.

Nothing I can attribute to the end links. Good point though, since their structure could squeak if not lubed.

That's what I'm beginning to think, since it didn't start until after having to drive through some salty flood water. Shame it's dark out. :wallbash:

I had the same noise. I have a needle greaser that I use to grease everything with a boot and no fitting. It puts a small hole in the boot but it gets the part greased and extends the life for a little bit.

Well, squeaking is still there. Only happens on rough roads or offroad, doesn't happen when I or anybody else jumps on the bumpers. Greased/lubed shock mounts, shocks, springs, control arm mounts, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. Any other ideas?

if you have a brushguard check to make sure everything is tight on it.
