Upgrading to Corvette Servo

Something not working right?

by TheHungriGerman » Thu Oct 15, 2015 8:18 am

I have a 2002 trailblazer LS 4x4 with 187,000 on the clock. It's been well cared for but lately I noticed a sloppy shift into 2nd gear. It hangs for maybe a second or 2 and just in second so I'm upgrading to the corvette servo in hopes that this will help. Any thoughts or feedback would be greatly appreciated

If Regulator doesn't respond here, you might want to PM him and invite him to respond here. He's the only one I know off the bat that has rebuilt one of these transmissions (at least twice) and might be able to offer some input. That's the only step I skipped when I did my valve work because I could not figure out how to get that sucker off on our truck. Granted, I didn't try too hard. If you make this change, please post back because I'm in a similar position with a sloppy 1-2 shift. I thought it was a sticky accumulator though.

Yea it's just that 1-2 shift. It like your grandma driving a manual. Slow and easy. Basically you have to tilt the tranny down.

Sooooooo apparently it wasn't the 1-2 shift but the band's are wearing out oj the clutch for 3rd gear. Full rebuild will cost 1500 with 1 year 12,000 mile warranty

I'm guessing you brought it to a shop, and they said it needs a full rebuild. The always say that. Be skeptical when dealing with a trans shop. I've never had good luck. Plus, that 1500 is just their cost to bring you in. I almost guarantee they'll end up saying that this and that need to be replaced too (they'll call them "hard parts") and your bill will end up 2500.

Is your quote of their explanation verbatim? If so, it doesn't make sense. Bands are used on 2&4 gears, and clutches are used for 1&3 gears. I don't think a band can't wear out a clutch.

Give it a fluid and filter change. Then drive it till it pops. Then don't mess with a rebuild at a trans shop, just buy a crate or junkyard trans and swap it out.

All I know is it stays in neutral for a second or 2 before going into 3rd gear

For $1500 they better not hit you up for more. I wish you were around here. We've got a great transmission guy who does wonders with the 4L60. His rebuilds are $1,000 including remove and replace. Hell, all he does is jerk yours and install one that he has ready to go then he rebuilds yours later for the next guy. Ask around, maybe you can find a guy like him around your area.

Where are you located? What does your trans fluid look like? Smell like? With that many miles it is very likely that it is warn out. 150k seems to be the lifespan of these transmissions. It is a scary task, but our really is not difficult to do your own trans work. You can buy as kit on eBay for less than $200.

Check out this guy's videos. He does a great job walking through each step. It is a full weekend job, but it can be done.

Located in Hellertown PA. Fluid a dark red. I'm a little sick at the moment so I can't smell much of anything. And I'm good with cars and not scared to get my hands dirty but I know when I'm out of my league.

Matt is right, it may well be at the end of it's life. But I do know I was able to resolve some slow shifts and slow down shifts with a shift kit. It's an option.

The eBay link from that thread is still good. TrailX has another write up, but I'm too lazy to go look it up for you.

I'll also recommend you take a look at rebuilding the trans yourself if it comes to that, it sounds a lot more daunting than it actually is.

Thanks for the help guys. So as it turns out the tranny decided it was tired. The delayed up shift was caused by a dirty pressure control solenoid which in turn was caused by the 3 4 clutch pack being burned out.
