muffled sound when accelerating

Something not working right?

by jak3on » Thu Jun 25, 2015 11:00 am

need help figuring this out. started the other morning out of nowhere when i accelerate it sounds muffled but only when i accelerate. when i let off the gas and coast its fine no noise. im also getting what i think is a loss of power and terrible gas mileage. averaging around 10-12mpg here lately. ive checked the o2 sensors, cleaned air filter, exhaust doesnt appear to be leaking and no odor from exhaust any ideas?

Getting a muffled exhaust noise on acceleration sounds normal to me. You'll have to be more descriptive, otherwise it just sounds like you're talking about normal engine exhaust noise.

okay its almost as if its struggling to accelerate and the sound is kind of hard to explain almost like a diesel or something. ive got a video i recorded with the sound in it. ive gotta push the pedal half way to the floor to reach 25mph and ive basically got to floor it to reach 60mph which is what most of my drive home from work is.

Sounds like a clogged cat.

Is the cat getting extremely hot? 60mph pushed to the floor would make it glow. The rear resonator could be coming apart and may have clogged up the tail pipe. Any string or fiberglass poking out the back?

Clogged converter would definitely cause that issue. As Andy mentioned, it'll start baking if it doesn't pass enough exhaust through.
