05 and 06 5.3L Vin M Interchangeable?

Something not working right?

by Melaronius » Thu May 14, 2015 7:57 am

Well I threw a rod while doing some drunken mudding a couple of weeks ago. Initially I was just going to get a new vehicle but I can't bring myself to do it. I guess I'm just going to drop a junkyard motor into it now. In my search I've come across quite a few 05 5.3L vin M motors but no 06's (I have an 06). Would the 05 fit in my truck without any issues? Any help would be appreciated.

Should fit just fine. Honestly, any garden variety LM7 should interchange. However, you'll want to source an LH6 to specifically match yours. They're aluminum block, AFM enabled and available from 05-09.

I don't think you'll want to mix anything electronic between the 05 and 06 years, but I don't know to what extent. The 05- and the 06+ use different com bus protocols. If I were you, I'd try to source a 06+ to be sure there are no unforseen electronic communication issues.

True, the PCMs are different, but his harness should drop in without issue onto the 05. I'd be really surprised if it didn't, but I've seen dumber things.

The LH6 is supposed to be a basically completely different engine, even though they'll both bolt up.

So I should just stick with getting the exact motor/year of my truck to be safe?

Thanks for all the help guys. Looks like those motor's are pretty hard to find. I'll keep an eye on ebay to see if anything pops up.

You should be able to find a similar year range 5.3 out of a truck or van. Take it down to the long block and add all your components and accessories to it. There will be some wrenching involved but you wont have to find the exact year and model TB or Envoy. Helps the search.
