chasing a front end noise/vibration

Something not working right?

by jdmser » Fri Mar 13, 2015 6:02 pm

A while ago I started to hear what I thought was a wheel bearing noise on the drivers side so I replaced it. I also replaced the cv shaft while I was in there because the inner boot had a tear. The noise was better but, not gone. I noticed the diff had a wet spot under the seal so I replaced the inner axle bearing and seal today. Again the noise was better but, not gone. While it was jacked up I started to spin the tire while listening for noise. That's when I noticed the diff moving. As I spun the tire one full revolution the diff/engine would move about an 1/8" in one direction and then the other. I would imagine bad motor mounts but, I haven't noticed any engine shake. Any thoughts?

I don't think so. There's not a lot of play in the axles or the pinion and the fluid came out dark but no metal.

Turned out to be a combination of the motor mounts and passenger side wheel bearing. The passenger side mount was so flat that it was putting the driver side cv in a bind. The noise from the bad passenger wheel bearing was throwing me off.

Thanks for updating the thread. Not the first time we've seen some garbage motor mounts.

Not too bad for oem mounts with 140k on them. I was just surprised how fast they went once they started to go. I'm thinking the temperature in February(we averaged 27* for the month) slowed the failure and then once the fluid warmed they were done.
