Power steering leak

Something not working right?

by 02_chevy » Tue Dec 02, 2014 3:00 pm

Hey all, pretty plain and simple question. I have a BAD leak coming from somewhere in my power steering system and i just need to know what can be replaced to stop the leak. I didnt the cooler already and i saw there is a pressure hose running from the pump to the rack and then obviously the pump. Is there anything else that could possible leak?

You can't identify the source? If it's pretty bad, seems like it should be easy to spot.

Can you try again on your comment about the cooler? It was unintelligible.

oops didnt realize the typo. I already did the cooler so i ruled that out. I figured since it is a bad leak i should be able to find it fairly easy but i cant see anything mostly bc the whole front of my engine is covered in PS fluid

Is it leaking out of the tie rod boots? That's easy to check by taking the boots off. If the boots are filled with PS fluid, that's a likely source.

The other likely leak point is the connection to the rack, that has been seen by a few members. You could tighten the connection bolt, or likely replace the O rings.

But, if you say the entire front of your engine is covered, its more than likely the pump, or a connection in that area. I'm not as familiar with this though.

Double check the connections on the cooler

the connection to the cooler was pissing a little but i tighten that and fixed it but theres still a heavy drip. When the truck is off sitting in my driveway it leaks a good amount. The drip spots are almost dead center behind the cooler but in front of the engine.

On another note i had to replace a tierod the other day and did notice some fluid come out of the rack

I got a full seal kit for like 30$ but thinking I may buy a whole rack just out of laziness.

Get some brake cleaner and hose down anywhere you see fluid, hopefully you have access to a lift... If not, life will suck. Spray everything off of the motor, pulleys, PS pump, etc. Drive for 2-5 minuets, make a lot of turns, then see where your leaking from. Just make sure the motor is cold, don't set yourself on fire. Should give you a good idea of where its leaking from. Good luck Sir. :salut:
