Bad wheel bearing after <10,000mi?

Something not working right?

by Pitch22 » Sun Aug 03, 2014 6:44 pm

Hey guys. Iv searched for about this topic a lot but I havnt quite found what I'm looking for. This past winter I replaced both my front hub assemblies. For about the past week iv been having a slight vibration in my steering wheel. There's also a slight hum around 40 mph. This seems different than the wheel bearing problems I had because the sound doesn't change if I turn left or right and the noise is much quieter then my bad bearings were. It's mainly the vibration in the steering wheel that's annoying. What could this be? Cv axle? Low diff fluid? Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I would start with rotating your tires. It sounds like a tire out of balance to me. It's never a bad idea to check your diff fluid though. FWIW, I've heard of bearings going out that fast, and faster.

Especially the Ebay bearings.

But a vibration in the steering wheel would generally point to a front wheel imbalance, or if its during braking only, bad rotors.

Not sure what the hum is from. That particular part of your story does jive with a bad wheel bearing.

I forgot to mention. I had brand new tires put on about a month before the vibration started. Then a 2.5" lift put on right after the tires. Everything was perfect for about a month and then the vibration and noise started. Could the lift have thrown it out of balance and it's just not showing until now?

Did you have it aligned after the lift? You're tires could be wearing uneven if you didn't, or if you didn't let the springs settle in before you had it aligned.

A wheel weight could have come off.

No I didn't have it aligned. Probably should have. I'll get the tires taken care of this week. Hopefully that will fix it. I dont know why I didn't think of that first. Thanks guys

So I got just got under my truck and I noticed there's grease around my cv axle. The hose clamp on the smaller end of the rubber boot somehow got losse (I can slide it with just my fingers). Could a dry cv b the cause of the vibration?

All your problems are likely centered around you never having it aligned, hope you didn't wreck the tires already. Go get it aligned.

For the CV boot, pull the CV, clean it up, repack with grease and reclamp the boot.

Surely it hasn't ruined the tires. There's only about 3,000 on them. I'm getting it aligned this week. One more quick question for you guys. Iv been thinking about getting z71 springs in the back and moog 8114 up front. I already have mark's 2.5" lift. Would those springs be safe to add or is it too much lift for the suspension? I believe it would be roughly another 1.5" in the front and back.

A few hundred miles on an unaligned suspension will wrecks tires... Experience.

I had to drive mine for two weeks while waiting on a control arm to come in, plus alignment to be scheduled. While I only did around 150 miles total, keeping it minimal as possible, you could see the front tires starting to scrub really bad due to the toe in. I rotated them to the back after alignment, and no damage was done, but after 3000 miles you'll have severe wear. It doesn't take much to annihilate them.
