Wheels won't balance

Something not working right?

by 02_chevy » Wed Jul 30, 2014 12:39 pm

For some reason my wheels won't balance -_- I'm running the summit D series 16x8 with 285/75 general grabber at2's. I've had them balance three times and they still keep coming unbalanced.
Any ideas?

Are you doing inside the wheel weights? or exterior rim weights? The tires I've had trouble getting balanced with inside weights worked out with the exposed rim weights.

Are you balancing them yourself?

It sounds like they were balanced and then become unbalanced, sounds like you're slinging off stick on weights.

and just to make sure you are washing the mud out of the rim?
Is it all the wheels or just one?

I have summit D also! Never had a problem 10k miles on them balanced once! Like navigator said maybe mud? I have inside weight. If all the wheels them try outer weights. If only one I would check the wheel or the tire! Or it's just mud.

I was having a local shop balance them and they were using inside and outside weights. They got them balanced two times but they lasted all of a couple days. The last time I brought them to get balanced they aside the couldn't do it.
The weights haven't fallen off either and I haven't been offroading yet (unfortunately-_-) so no mud

Are the tires actually out of balance or does it just ride like it is out of balance?
When they put the tire on the balancer is it out? Could a rim that isn't true or a rough patch on the tire or some other issue make it appear it was out of balance?

I can't understand a tire being balanced today and tomorrow it being out of balanced unless maybe the wheel weight coming off. The only other thing, didn't the Wranglers with Kevlar have an issue with spinning on the rim?

I wouldn't expect it but it might be of interest to mark the tire at the valve stem and and where the weights are to see if they are slipping on the rim or something odd like that.

That Grabber and D series are both common setups, I would be surprised if it is something like that.

Honestly, I think I would try a different shop.

When the wheel is on the balancer it's off by a lot and the rims and tires I bought brand new, doesn't appear to be and rough spots on the tires and I'm 110% sure the wheel weights aren't coming off. I have brought the wheels to a different shop where I personally balanced them but everytime they wind up going out of balance

if that is the case then I think marking them to see if they are slipping would be the next choice. It seems like a longshot but it is all I've got left.

I'd have someone check that the wheels are true as well

Are you sure a belt hasn't slipped in the tire?
If it'll balance on the machine and then become unbalanced on the truck I would assume a belt is shifting throwing it out of whack. Given that the other options have been exhausted.

Is this with all four tires?

In the diagram Moots posted it shows the belts, the picture is an example of a snapped belt. The belts can also shift side to side in a bad tire. It should be visibly apparent though.

I'd say those two tires need replaced and are defective in some fashion, I'd take em back to where you got em and request replacements. There's really not anything else it could be since you're saying they're showing unbalanced on the machine repeatedly after previously balancing not once, but multiple times and you've verified the wheels are true and the tires aren't slipping on the wheel.

If there is broken or slipped belt I am surprised the shop did not notice it when they balanced it.

I gotta check Tm and see if I see anything wrong and far as them being misshaped, I got them for a steal from some guy on Craigslist and they had barely any miles so can't get them replaced :/
I might try another shop just to get an opinion from them

Looks like they may have been a steal for a reason. LOL

let us know what happens.

Have you tried tossing them on the rear axle and seeing if that's livable? Sometimes you can get away with it.
