center nut on top of strut comming loose

Something not working right?

by harvyne » Sat May 10, 2014 6:38 pm

So i have had my new monroe struts installed with markmc 2.5 lift for a couple weeks now and the center nut which connects to the strut shaft keeps comming loose resulting in a clanking noise till i tighten it up again. I replaced the struts as a whole assembly though i did have to take them apart to add the lift. Im not sure if the struts are just setting over time or if this is a problem,????

A m10x1.5 nylon lock nut should cure the problem.
Some guys use Blue loctite

The alignment shouldn't change the way the nut is tightened on. To be honest I've never had a regular nut on the shock loosen up. As Mark mentioned, a nylon lock nut should keep it where it's suppose to be.

Checked the front end. Everything is tight. Me. And my son took a drive and isolated the sound to be coming from the rear shocks, so wont be driving till skyjackers are in.

torque-stripe is always a handy thing to use on fasteners after you tighten them. While it doesn't increase the strength like loctite does, it does provide a visual indicator of lost torque. I use it everywhere.

I think we have seen a few members that didn't tighten their nut down tight enough when doing the install that had some movement as well.

ill admit that was my first bad, after installing the spacers i didnt think the strut shaft nut got tightened all the way down so i only tightened it where about a 1/4 in of thread showed above the nut, after installing the struts and test driving it was'nt long before they made a racket, upon inspecting, the struts had settled and the shaft rose past the strut mount another inch. so we just tightened the nuts down till they were tight and problem was solved.
