Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

How bad are these ..?

Something not working right?

Took apart the 4.10 front diff I purchased, and found one of the bearings looks like it has some pitting. Is this a big deal? All the others look fine and roll nice....Image

That looks to me like it's goop that would wipe off of the rollers. I assume you've already sprayed it all with lots of carb/brake cleaner and a brush, or put it in a parts washer before you took the picture?

Yes I did clean it first. You can feel/ see the pitting. Its just on one bearing, and just on about 5 or 6 rollers.

Anyone have any tips on how to get the races out? Do the come out from the seal side? Do ya have to take the other bearings out first? Image

They are toast!! Replace them all and think hard about any other bearings in the unit due to metal in the oil and running through the bearings. Just saying. I know its a pain but I would rebuild all.

My understanding is that you unscrew the adjuster, and the bearing race will come out the same side as the adjuster.

Yeah, looking at that race, it needs replaced. When you replace a bearing you need to replace it's race as well.

Probably would be best to get the full rebuild kit.

The side bearings and races are a breeze, the pinion races and bearings are a little tougher. I removed mine with a prybar and a punch.

Outside of an inch pound torque wrench there really ain't too many special tools involved, just takes patience.

The race just kinda floats, remove the adjuster and tap it out towards the inside of the housing. Some times they just fall out. I've done a couple front diff rebuilds, post any question you may have.
