New fan clutch not disengaging

Something not working right?

by 02_chevy » Fri Apr 18, 2014 2:00 am

So after the headaches of fixing my truck i still have one more problem. I just replaced my fan clutch and for some reason it seems to not disengage when at a higher rpm. By that i mean it sounds like an 18 wheeler with the fan roaring. its ok at an idle and driving normal but if i have to get on the parkway and give it some gas, the fan just roars. i did notice that one time it did disengage randomly but thats it. Any ideas?

It's a new one? What symptoms did the old one have?

Inspect the harness for bent pins not connecting.

What brand?

So it is matched with engine RPM, or only at higher RPM it stays engaged and idle it's fine? Double check the connections. CEL on?

Aren't we suppose to use AC Delco?

my fan clutch was stuck when i purchased my envoy 2 years ago and i just finally changed it last month. wish i done it sooner because i cant believe the amount of strain that thing put on my engine not to mention the gas. what a difference now. So quiet and the truck has so much more power and way better gas mileage, i got my new one off ebay for 75.00 where as auto zone wantes 200.00.
when i researched about it i found that it could be a number of things other than the clutch to keep it engaging. however i finally just took a chance and replaced the fan clutch itself, glad i did.
Mine would only disengage after getting up past 40mph or so for an extended time but every time i came to a stop i get the mack truck sound again. Kick myself for letting it go so long.
not sure if my post was helpful but just wanted to add my experience

I too just the mack truck sound but only on a cold start up which i read was normal. The fan gets really loud and vibrates as i accelerate and as i said disengages at about 4800 then i get all my power back and it runs good. seeing as how my gas mileage is close to nothing right now i might just change it again
