Weird vibration

Something not working right?

by 02_chevy » Fri Mar 14, 2014 4:20 pm

OK so ive been having a vibration noise coming from the front of my truck and not sure where it can be coming from. So heres the back story, Ive replaced a list of things:
Inner and outer tie rods
both wheel bearings
both CV axles
both sway bar end links

And i got brand new tires. i also did a bds lift then got the truck aligned and didnt have a problem. But just the other day i put z71's in and changed the spark plugs and now i have a humming/vibration when i accelerate and while im cruising. It seems to go away when i take my foot off the gas and coast but whenever i touch the gas it comes back. I can feel the vibration in my steering wheel and i can faintly hear it.

Anyone have any ideas? I did a search and didnt find this exact problem

do you feel it in the seat of your pants or gas/break pedal or just in the steering wheel?
Did you double check everything you added is still tight?
Do you have wheel adapters/spacers? If so have they been re-torqued?
Anyone think the change in geometry of lifting the rear has magnified a worn UJoint?

Ujoint is a possibility, especially if it's audible. Do you feel/hear it while stationary? If so, that rules out a u-joint. From his description, it seems to be RPM/load related, I'd be checking everything on your belt. Even motor mounts are a possibility at this point.

I checked my flux capacitor lol all good

New to add I started my truck from a cold start and it was reving higher then normal.
Normally it's at 1100-1200 but it went up to 1400 and the truck was idling rough after the rpms came down. And I would say yes it's a problem only under a load

Definitely want to check the u-joints. When I lifted my 85 4runner, I got this wicked thunking and vibration. I was really worried that something got messed up, replaced the u-joints and all was good. I lifted that truck 3 inches in the front and 4 in the back, so it was significantly over stock.

Possibly muffler bearings? Those are a pain in the butt when they go out. The parts store can never find them for me.

Thats because you need to use the left handed screwdriver to refill your pneumatic fluid resevoir.... Duh.

To the OP: have you made any progress? Checked ujoints? Drank a beer?

Halogen fluid was good and i just change my muffler bearings :mechanic:

Correct me if im wrong but if it were the ujoints the vibration would be there even when not under power right? and of course i had a beer lmao

I did check them though and theyre fine, im starting to think its engine related but i could be wrong

I can't believe nobody hasn't suggested motor mounts yet.

What would be an easy way to check motor mounts?

Collapsed motor mounts shouldn't be able to cause loss of power. If you have a buddy with a similar vehicle, compare your motor height to his. Or pry up on the motor mounts with a crowbar and see how much you can raise the engine. 1/2" should be about it.

Loss of power can be one of a hundred other things. Clogged cat causing backpressure. Bad plugs or fuel delivery. Can't narrow it down until you start a structured troubleshooting process.

Ok thanks, I just changed the spark plugs and that's when I started noticing anything. I was told cat in these trucks are known to go bad but didn't really search about it yet. The air filter is still clean so I doubt it would be that. My truck has a mind of its own :zombie:

What plugs did you use? If anything other than AC Delco Iridium 41-103 I'd replacing them. It is well documented many places on OFTB and GMTNATION that our SUV only run well with 41-103. My 2 c. :thumright:

I had a similar issue where the fuel pump actually came apart inside my tank, but it threw the "bank 1 lean condition" code on the dash.

Bad coil/s would cause a blinking light on the dash.

I've heard that the throttle body itself can cause issues if it gets gunked up.

I'd check out the TB first, four bolts and a little scraping.

So i just replaced my belt and it stopped some noises at an idle but the truck is idling rough and still driving like shit. if i put it in neutral and rev it nothing bad happens so its only under a load that it makes the noises and vibrates

I thinks it is obvious that you are having misfires. The Z71 Springs would in no way introduce vibrations, especially in the front. A mis-fire will cause severe vibrations under load conditions (accelerating and cruising). Your CEL should be on and perhaps a light flashing Reduce Engine Power comes on as well. This happened to me before and what ended up being my problem was I had over tightened two spark plugs allowing for the ceramic to crack. Once the engine warmed up the crack in the ceramic would get larger and cause enough pressure loss to create a misfire.

Check your plugs, check your codes, check your coil packs. Thats where the problems most likely lies.
