Broken sway bar link

Something not working right?

by Anthony Hernandez » Tue Mar 11, 2014 9:52 am

I was swapping my fsbl out and the thing doesn't have a spot for holding it with a wrench to keep it from turning while you are tryin to free it up to remove it... I cut off the boot thinkin it might be underneath it... My new ones have it as well as grease fittings, ( the other one didn't) any one know of a way to "hold" it from spinning to remove the bolt?

there should be a large allen head inside the bolt itself.
You can hold the bolt with the a large allen wrench while turning with a wrench.

As Chris said Should be an Allen key hole. The absolute gayest thing to ever think of. I had to hack mine off when doing my axle swap.

If you're trying to use the allen hex recess, start spraying it with PB Blaster a couple of days in advance. The basic insane design of these links is the hex recess makes the threaded part weaker with a thinner wall. And the amount of torque you can develop with the allen wrench before it spins in the recess is tiny. You can attempt to strengthen the threaded stud wall by putting a nut on it to increase the effective wall thickness, but why bother? You're going to throw it away later. Installing the link using the hex recess is usually not necessary, since the nut snugs up nicely without your having to hold the stud. Another trick to make sure they don't get noisy later is to severely OVERtorque the nuts you put on, and use loctite.
