Cooling fan clutch problem

Something not working right?

by drew2 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 11:47 pm

About a month ago i noticed that my cooling fan clutch was starting to go out. It is making my car run at higher RPM's, it is ticking, and is now starting to squeak. I can live with the noise that it is making, but my question is-- if i don't replace the clutch right now will it have any long term or harmful effects on the engine? Where would I go to find a new cooling fan clutch at a reasonable price? Thanks

Just an option I found quickly. As far as long term affects, I'm not sure.

Well they fail to a locked position, so worse case, eventually it'll sound like a jet engine, you'll get an SES light that may keep you from passing inspection (depending on where you live) the truck will likely over cool, you'll get significantly decreased gas mileage (think single digit mpg from old reports I've read) and everyone will make fun of you. Especially here. We'll definitely make fun of you.
Since you've known about it for a month we assume you've been saving up some money for it, you should continue to do so and replace it as soon as funds allow. It's a relatively straight forward job. Takes maybe an hour and a half.

it's an hour and a half job if you've done it before. First time it'll likely by ~2-3 hours. Look up the tricks for breaking the tq on the fan clutch. I used the chain+bolt method

Thank you all for the responses. Yes as I am in college I am trying to save up for the parts needed. I also need to replace a seal on the front left hand side of the car near the transfer case.

The transfer case is in the center of the driveline just aft of the transmission. Perhaps you mean the front differential? Yes, those seals do go bad. Dealer-only item, about $30, I think.

That's what I thought but when I received my front diff master rebuild kit from Yukon (aka Randy's Ring & Pinion) it has the inner and outter seals in the kit. Now I have two sets

Are you sure the one from Randy's is the correct seal? I'll be the seal that came with it is for the S10 or something.

Since I plan on documenting the re-gear I started a new topic http://forums.offroadtb.com/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=4910
