tps sensor, have some questions.

Something not working right?

by tarsh » Mon Dec 23, 2013 6:11 pm

I know I've posted about this before but I'm curious about a few things. First, is the tps part of the throttle body or can it be replaced? Second, if something we're to be wrong with it, would it be causing my trans to shift in and out of overdrive. Anywhere from 20 mph to 65mph.if it's at 66, it won't do it.I know it can't be good for my trans and I need to get it fixed.and I believe it does it in 3rd as well as D, just a little more shuttle.

The best thing would be to connect a scan tool and see if you tps is reading. The tps is part of the TB.

Say....if I took it to the zone and had them plug in the scanner, they could, in theory, see any info on it? Am I correct? I'm sick of trying to feather the peddle to get it to not shift like it does.

I'm pretty sure the vehicle has to be driven while the scanner is plug in to see what the tps is reading. I haven't used my scanner I have in awhile so I'm not 100% that going to the zone they will be able to read it just at idle, unless they let you drive with it.

Throttle position sensors can cause shifting problems. I don't know if it would cause your specific issue.

I'm pretty sure the scanner auto zone is using is just a simple code reader. You're gonna need a better OBDII scanner to see values for individual sensors.

What was the outcome?
I recently bought an 04 TB with 75k on it and it seems to shift a little funny at times, and the pedal seems to vibrate slightly sometimes kinda like (but far more subtle) the brake pedal does when the ABS activates.

It's the valve body in my trans. I got a shift kit for it. I don't remember which valve/ piston it is but it's what locks up the torque converter.it's worn out and needs replaced. So my trans slips in and out of lockup as I drive. It's very annoying. The kit was cheap
