Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

8.4-11.2 MPG

Something not working right?

by CNCwell » Wed Dec 18, 2013 1:46 pm

I am getting horrible gas mileage. I do have my spare on the roof until i built a carrier for it, but I wouldn't think that would have this much of an affect. I recently replaced my cam shaft sensor along with the passenger side ABS sensor. I have no warning lights and a scan comes up clean. Any thoughts?

Those are HWY mpg's.

What's your gear ratio and tire size? I assume I6?

What is your normal travel speed on the interstate. What kind of terrain? When did you notice the change in mileage?

O2s would be my first guess given no other obvious problems and it's a sudden change since well after the lift.

and if your throttle body hasn't been cleaned in a while it might be worth it to clean that.
Seems like most tanks I average around 15.5 MPG running 32s and 3.42s with about 4" lift.
Most of my driving is rural. I don't dog it or drive like grandpa.

With Baja Rack and my tire on top my truck I only got around 12.5 mpg, so the tire is not helping. Bad O2 sensors could cause crappy mpg as well.

That is a HUGE range of MPG. How many miles were those figures calculated over. Are they hand done figures or the BS the computer spits out?

Do a hand calculation over 2 full tanks at least to get a number worth a shit.

are you considering your tire size change when figuring your miles?
if stock is 29.8 and your new tire is 32.8 that is about a 10% difference in circumference so your miles would be off a factor of 10% (if I did my math right).

I'm running stock gears and 285/75/17s. I know that's not a good combo and new gears will come this spring. I average about 70 on the HWY. I make several trips a month from Florence Ky to Columbus OH. The gas is company paid and I pulled those numbers from our fuel report. I had the secondary air injection pump replaced about 6 months ago, but I didn't think about the O2 sensors. I will clean the TB and check those.

those would be what most folks would call "34s" which would make the mileage further off.
"stock" gears can be 3.42, 3.73 or 4.10
Look up the RPO code.

If you're on 3.42 gears and 34s, I'm not surprised at your mileage.

I would expect the tranny to be nice and toasty as well.

Yeah, they're 3.42 gears. Looks like I need to do some work. Also just found out that I have no G80. Kinda sucks. Well the search is on for 4.10s.

Yep, the few I6 models with 3.42 and 34-35" tires that I've seen a trans temp gauge on typically run 240-270F trans temps on the highway, because they won't stay in lockup at highway speed, and the I6 has a REALLY loose torque converter that makes a TON of heat.
