CV Axle Bad

Something not working right?

by Aries » Thu Dec 12, 2013 9:59 pm

I take it this is a bad CV Axle? This gray grease was not there 5 weeks ago when I checked the disconnect.

As long as it hasn't been submerged in water, then you can salvage the axle. Take the tripot off , go buy a can of CV grease for $5, repack it with grease, put a new clamp on it and call it good.

Yes they are. Your cv joint should be fine, just hose clamp the boot in place. Mine looked like that a few weeks ago and I cleaned out the old grease and pumped in some new grease before doing the clamp.

Got one from Amazon. Once I replace the bad one I'll rebuild it and have a spare.

Funny, the ones from autozone have held up wonderfully for me.

James, would it be advisable to swap out the band clamp for a hose clamp before the axle is installed.

As long as you inspect your vehicle regularly, there's no need. If you notice grease flung around the inner tripod joint, then replace it. There's a good chance that the band will hold up, mine have.

Probably different brands, I spoke with the general manager about the issue and sees the issue. He's going to let me purchase another shaft and warranty out the one I currently have. I found pep boys has cv shafts with 5 ribbed inner boots like the OEM's.

Next quest I believe is seeing if I can get them lengthend 1/2" now that I have extra funds.

Installed the replacement CV axle today but had a hell of a time getting the inboard CV axle cup out of the disconnect. I mean I literally could not get it out. Sense I was replacing the disconnect anyway I figured I would remove it with the axle and work on it later. "Man was I surprised". The disconnect would not come loose from the oil pan, nothing, it would not budge. I tried for two hours :wallbash: before I removed the four bolts and left the inboard half fused to the oil pan, cleaned out all the old grease, added some new grease. Separated my spare disco and installed it on the inboard half "that's fused to the oil pan".

I will have to get some penetrating fluid down there and let it work it's way in! I'll have to work on it again when I do the re-gear.

The boot on the OEM CV axle that I removed felt like hard plastic rubber where the one on the Cardone axle felt more soft and flexible rubber? This is the boot I'm looking at to replace the ones on the old cv axle. Has anyone used this boot?

I used that silicone boot with so so results, I had better luck with the neoprene boot, Kyle had good luck with the Detroit axle rebuilds on eBay that come with the neoprene boot.
In short, go neoprene, or make sure the boot is 5 rib.

There's a pretty substantial thread called "CV boot that stays together" that covers the topic pretty well with all the current options and thoughts. I'd suggest giving it a read.

Yeah, seems a lot of people have trouble removing that disconnect. Mine gave me fits, but it eventually came out. Some don't and just break off, which is a worst-case scenario.

I think I was a lucky one and I pulled it off my oil pan with just my fingers....however I added anti-seize when I put it back in because I could see where it might eventually corrode and seize on there.

I dislike the cardone due to the weak boots.

Lengthen the boots or the CV? I do not see a need for either, but curious as to which you refer to and why you deem it necessary.

Is this the Neo-Boot your referring to? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sps-33001/overview/
