Something not working right?

by tarsh » Wed Oct 02, 2013 10:36 pm

So I'm driving my blaze today going at an avrage rate of speed (45ish.....) And my blaze started shifting up and down up and down. Running at 1900 rpms, maybe alittle more. I don't have any clue what's going on. Low trans fluid? Plugged cat? Bad pcm? Help me please!!! Need to fix ASAP

Was it actually shifting, or slipping? Was it sharp changes in RPM or was it soft like using a clutch?

Obviously, check your fluid ASAP. Also smell the fluid for a burned smell.

Iv always had a light. It was harder shifts than a slip. Its like it was Dropping in and out of overdrive. Low rpms. I will check the fluid first thing at 7 am. Befor work. Drives fine in any other rpm range , gear, ect.

what was the light on for and why had it not been fixed? Have you had the computer checked to see if their are any new codes?

If you meant scan tools by computers, this is the one I have. Hardly expensive at all if you have a laptop. Or for the same ballpark if you have an android phone, you can get the app Torque Pro and a bluetooth OBDII connecter.

Generally speaking the pcm is rarely the problem, those codes are there to tell you what is wrong so you can fix it easily (relatively speaking). The codes generally specify a specific sensor or parameter that is out of whack.

One of those codes might have something to do with the transmission, they might not. It's strongly advised to find out what the codes are and to write them down so we have somewhere to start from.

Check the transmission fluid level, note the color, it should be red.

From the info you provided so far, I'm unsure of what else to suggest. We need more info.

I'm fairly certain you're feeling your torque converter dropping in and out of lockup. I bet you don't feel it in 1st or 2nd gear, and only in 3rd if you're in D3. You only feel it a highway speeds.

The iso-con valve gets extra clearance in its bore through wear and leaks pressure, causing it to intermittently fall out of lockup, and spiking the rpms a couple hundred revs.

A shift kit, like the one I installed from transgo will get rid of the issue. That or you can change out the valves for a reman kit.

Oh, and there are no codes for this failure.

You do realize that the codes that come up indicate that there is a problem that needs to be fixed. Just erasing them does not solve the problems that you have.

Take your truck to Advance, Auto Zone, or O'reilies and have them check the codes. write them down and come back to us with some intelligent information and we will do the best we can to help you. Until then the best recommendation I can give you is to either sell it or replace the engine and transmission.

Really?? you just cleared it and didn't try to fix anything? Fix your Truck don't just sweep thing under the rug. Keep clearing the code without doing anything about them and you'll have more to pay to fix your truck then the cost of a "piuter" :zombie:

So I scanned it. Had 02 sensor. Bank 1 and the clutch fan sensor(i removed the windmill off this thing so that one is no biggie) the 02 sensor could be because of my straight pipe correct? Not reading correctly?

To james's reply I only get it on side roads. Anywhere else is fine. And yes only in d3

Describe when you're seeing the trans issues again?

Only in D3, what speeds? What throttle input?

D4 on the interstate you don't have issues?

What size tires and what gears do you have?

Is it quick random pulses of engine rev? It feels a bit like a misfire, but instead of losing power, you kinda gain revs?

Please explain in as much detail as you can, and please put a few minutes into explaining it FULLY.

Ok. Only mods iv done is cai and straight pipe. Beyond curb appeal.(lift 2.5, stock tires and rims. FYI... I did something to mine that I have yet to see on any t blaze anywhere. My little secret. I might post a pic). Anyways. At 1300 1400 rpms of I hold my speed... Light pressure on peddle. So I'd be crewsing at 45 to 55 mph. It slightly jolts forward shifting in and out of overdrive. Like the tork converter is locking and unlocking. My transfluid is as good as can be. No codes to mess with the drivetrain.

Sounds like textbook TCC iso-con valve wear.

The only thing strange is that you said it doesn't happen in D, only D3... is that because you don't get above 55 mph? It should happen with the shifter in both D and D3.

You'll find my thread about how I fixed it here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=3022

Then your symptoms seem to align with the prognosis. Good luck with the shift kit install.
