Leaning to the Left!?!?!

Something not working right?

by Cable810 » Mon Sep 16, 2013 3:11 pm

I just noticed that my TB is leaning to the left for some odd reason... I've done some digging and it seems that it could be either a bad shock or coil spring. The left side is about 1"-2" lower than the right side. Axle is even across the entire thing. Tire is not low, driveway is not the cause. I moved it to a couple different spots on the driveway and still is leaning. I had it parked in the Grass for a few days but noticed the lean after it had been parked in the grass. Seems a little stiff when rocking the TB on the left side and right side was loose.

Any Ideas?

Take fender height measurements of all 4 corners. My understanding is that it is normal for both front sides to be slightly different than each other. But an all of a sudden change could mean a spring wearing out or a collapsed shock like you said.

Also, I'm assuming you still have your front sway bar? It could be a busted link or a bad mount bushing letting the spring tension from the sway bar torque the body over.

I'd be very surprised if it was a shock. They don't do much for height. Either something is bent, a sway bar is doing something weird (try disconnecting it) or you have a spring that has been overcompressed and has taken a set.

I had this exact same problem caleb, and even new springs (the part that does have to do with resting height) did nothing to relieve the aleve the issue. What I did to make my truck sit straight again, was to make a small spacer out of polyurethane (plastic cutting board) and slapped it on the left side. This made everything nice and straight again.

I later discovered the root cause to be a slightly bent frame. The truck has never been in a crash, nor have I heavily abused it. Maybe years of hitting Michigan/Ohio potholes have finally taken it's toll.

Caleb, your truck just wants to have the Gangsta lean.

I'd rather it not have the gangster lean. Well I got some measurements today and they go as followed. If I was to remove the front sway bar end links I'd have to cut them off. They look to be in good shape. I did notice that the cross tube under the axle is bent a little but not much. I don't see how that could throw the body off. I took it to she shop behind my house and he was stumped and didn't know even what to say. The last time I did anything was when I took the doors off and flexed it... wondering If I flexed it enough to throw something outta whack.

Left Side:
Read Fender 36 3/4"
Front Fender 36 7/8"

Right Side:
Rear Fender 37 7/8"
Front Fender 37 3/4"

Axle From the outside of the diff housing both sides:
13 5/8"

Frame:
Rear by bolts for rear bumper:
25 1/4" both left and right side
bout the middle of the frame 12 1/2" both sides
Front of Frame by bumper was 21 1/4"

All measurements were to the bottom of frame, fender, and axle.

So you're saying that your frame is level with the ground, but your body is off by an inch?

Take a picture of that bend in the swaybar (I assume that's what you meant by "cross tube"?).

Just throwing it out there, but I've seen body mounts collapse on very rare occasions. Might take a look there.

Little confused by what the "cross tube" is.

I have 2 collapsed body mounts on the same side and my body doesn't lean, you'd have to have all of them collapse to see a noticeable difference

He said he dosen't have a swaybar in the rear I believe it's the tracbar he is refering to.

Not the trac bar this bar Lol

I was thinking it was the body mounts too, but looking at them they seem like the mounts on the other side. Then again I don't know what a collapsed body mount looks like. The body is closer to the frame on the left Vs the right.

If your last statement is indeed correct, then it can only be the body mounts... or you bent your body.

I just can't see how one could bend their body especially with a frame under it. I can that happening with a Uni-body though. But if it was a bent body wouldn't the portion where its bend be the closest to the frame? Cause it looks even across the mid section of the frame.

This was back in November of 12 kinda looks like she's leaning left just a tad.
