Rear doors lock, but won't unlock.

Something not working right?

by SaltWaterDrinker » Mon Sep 09, 2013 6:09 am

While getting ready for a huge road trip I discovered that my rear doors lock, but they do not unlock. The front doors work fine. What would be causing this?

Did you try locking from the passenger door?

the driver door switch is a common failure item (unsure which years).
The dealer just replaced mine for free.

you should of gotten a recall for your doorlocks from GM, if you've done that, check and make certain you didn't engage the child safety locks, not sure how they open once engaged....

with the child safety locks, the locks work normally, the inside handles just don't work.

That would not effect the power locks, those only prevent manual opening from the inside when engaged you can only open doors from outside. Try unlock/lock the rear from there switches. See if that works. On my chevy s10 blazer work truck every once I awhile the front passenger windows will not go up from the driver door unless I press the passenger switch down or up. Then it is fine for a few months.

The recall was for the master panel on the driver's door.

In my world and with my truck, it is - especially because each trip come with a massive dosage of stress and anxiety because it'll either make or break my future down there.

Thanks though.

This is when I use the Key FOB (remote). They lock just fine, but do not unlock. The control panel does not work either. Regarding that - I am a 2003 - would I be part of that recall?

So when you push lock, they get the signal but won't unlock via fob, driver panel, or passenger panel? Do you have any way of unlocking them?

I don't even think they get the signal. I don't hear anything clicking inside. Could I have severed a wire somewhere along the pilar that divides the front and rear?

I could reach back and so it but that defeats the purpose...lol

For you, the meaning of the trip is big. I get that. But the distance/time ain't so much.

Sounds like someone needs to break out a wiring schematic.

There are two related relays in the rear fuse block under the back seat. One is the rear 'Lock' relay. The other is the rear 'Unlock' relay. Find them and swap them. If they unlock, but don't lock after. Get a relay. Otherwise some circuit testing will be necessary.

I can't post a fuse block diagram from my phone, but the attachment should be the schematic.

loose or corroded connection, get yourself some dielectric grease. Could still be one of the relays internal contacts. Look for white residue could be salt.

If you have a problem with the rear locks only, it is usually a relay issue or freaking 'terminal fretting'. Always unplug grease and reset shit.

Man as far as salt goes. I hate that stuff, unless its on my steak. I feel sorry for all you guys in snow and near the beach.
