Cam shaft position sensor

Something not working right?

by TangoBravo » Tue Feb 19, 2013 2:31 am

Well thats your call friend. But if it were my truck(and it was at one time) I would go ahead and put a new CPAS in. I think I paid 45 for mine, one 10mil bolt and a power steering pump 30mins worth of time and I was done. I was glad I didnt listen to the mechanic that said it needed a new motor. Worst case your out afew bucks and some time. Well and possibly a motor. But if it does fix it then your good to go.

Went out and tested the timing and it was reading (at idle) 12.5*-17* I don't know if this is normal or if it should be 0* as I've never tested timing before but even tho the SES light was not on, it picked up P0014
So I'm assuming this is telling me before I pull the motor to replace the CPAS
Am I right?
The only thing that's killing me is the common sound of a spun bearing and the gold flake that I have found on the dipstick and on the cam position sensor

Do some parts stores call it a engine variable timing control solenoid? Or is that something completely different

Reading the idle with the scan tool it sits at 612.5 and only goes up a little to around 615, not a lot to notice by sound or vibration so I really have no symptoms of rough idle other than that slight variance in idle I found with the scan tool
It seems to be running ok and starts everytime, other than the loud spun bearing sound
I would like another opinion on this before I drop another $70 in a motor that I'm already guessing is done and has to be pulled out
I did find a low mileage used 4.2 for $550

You spun a rod bearing.

Knocking + squeaking is a dead giveaway.

Quit running the motor, you're just doing more damage.

I know it's a long shot but does anyone have the TSB for the cracked cylinder wall lining
