Something not working right?

by 2003tv » Fri Jan 18, 2013 2:04 pm

Ok guys this is my plan i am going to pull both cv and i am going to take apart the 4x4 disconnect again look it over and make sure i put it back together right and i talked to mark i am going to take out 3'' front lift spacers and put his 2.5'' spacers on to see if it will help with the angle and i am going to look at the front drive shaft so thats the plan for this weekend will keep you updated

You haven't gotten under there and shaken the front drive shaft, yet? It's free and takes 2 minutes...

I have marks 2.5" lift and have the problem so I don't think the lift is the issue.
When I first put on my lift I didn't have this issue.
Mine started after getting new CV's and ball joints put in by the dealer.
Since then I've prolly gone through 5 CV's couple outer tie rods and put new grease in the quick disconnect. I've looked over things multiple times not finding anything. I'd look again but its gonna be single digits here for the next week or 2 so not a whole lot I can do.

Ok well I tried to get a video of what I think the issue is. I jacked the truck up by the lower control arm to keep my ride height the same, if you watch the center shaft up towards the upper tripod you can see it move up and down slightly.

My hypothesis is still too severe of a driveline angle, that little bit of slop that has formed with the addition of power being applied it causing the vibrations. I went down a semi smooth dirt road and vibrations are still present. I have marks 3" kit.

looks like that cv shaft is warped... Is that clunking sound just you rolling the tire?

That noise is just me pushing on the tire, other wise there are no odd noises from the cv joints....I do have a humming/growling noise present 20-30mph in 2hi but figured it was the resonance of my mud tires and I have new wheel bearings which didn't change the sound either.

Once I get some spare cash flowing again after this career change I just did I'm going to tear everything apart and dig deeper into this, also see if a reman set of cv's does anything for me. Since this doesn't inhibit my daily driving its on the back buner till then.

Also looking into cost of custom high angle cv shafts, or having someone fabricate Porsche 930 cv flanges with our input spline shaft mounted to it and me assembling the rest of it.

The Porsche 930 joint...

930 flange adapter...

I don't think it would be too expensive if I can source everything myself.

I'm hoping that was 4HI. LOL. Just for snits and figgles I put mine in 4lo the other day and got up to about 23 going around the block. I have Mark's 3", new wheel bearings, original CV's, and haven't touched my disconnect. No vibration. Little bit of a whine, but that's it. My best guess is over or under greased and/or bad bearings on the disconnect. Or something in the front diff or transfer. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

After a lot of reading on this site, I have determined to never use the a4wd. I know others can back me up on this.

Let us know what you find. Than I'm sure we can point you towards a thread or two covering what repairs you need and how to do them yourself.

If the flowchart doesn't point to one root cause, the behavior in the OTHER mode transitions may have more clues. And the behavior after a fuse-pull reset.
