Broken coil stud...

Something not working right?

by gotspeed1 » Tue Dec 21, 2010 4:42 pm

There is plenty of info on the OS, but I figured I'd leave this one here, seeing as I check in here on a daily basis. While changing my plugs this morning, I decided to go a quarter turn more on the bolts and snapped the end off of one of them in the head (a torque wrench isn't yet, but will be next in my "artillery"). I shamefully bring this newb style question to you all. Have any of you dealt with this and what was your method to removing it  . It is the number 5 coil from the front. :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

Happened to me when I replaced my plugs. I can't recall if it was the #1 or #2 coil bolt that broke off in the head. I examined the damage for some time. Thought about drilling out the bolt and rethreading it. Luckily, the bolt had broken in a way that left a small lip above the head. This lip was all I needed to get a small flathead in there to back out the bolt enough to get pliers on it. Picked up a replacement bolt from dealer, no part store/hardware store had anything like it.

BTW: moved this to the Troubleshooting section.

Not for this particular bolt - but I've used some screw extractors with some amount of luck... soak the bolt in PBB to help get rid of any additional friction. I broke an extractor in half once - ended up having to drill it - but I don't think there's enough room on cylinder #5.

If there is enough of the bolt sticking out, you may want to consider using this:
I know it is a tap kit, but the actual tool that holds the bits should bite on to the bolt enough to back it out of the hole. It is compact, so clearance issues should be nil.
