CB Interfering with TV's and picking up engine rev's??

Something not working right?

by lil_freak_66 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 8:58 am

I started having CB issues the other day,Tv's that arent connected to cable or satellite(just running off antenna) were picking up my transmissions.
This morning,a static frequency came across my cb which matched the tone of my rev's,going higher pitched when my rev's went up and lower when it would shift gears.

Running a Midland 1001Z for the cb,26 inch "walmart special" mag mount.

Anyone know what could cause this? I gotta get it fixed before the offroad trip in September.

My horn and windshield washer feeds-back into my CB. Your alternator must be putting off a lot of EMI for some reason.

Try adjusting your gain and squelch level to get rid of the feedback.

Check your ground as well. Feedback can be attributed to that. Even if it was solid at first, connections can loosen. Unless you soldered them from the get go, in which case you can disregard my post.

If someone else hears the whining of the alternator when you transmit I would guess it is a grounding issue of the radio.

Just wondering, is that a fully legal radio? or one of those that have been modded to put out 400W?

Probably not, most people who mod them go for larger, shinier radios. So you should definitely look at your antenna, grounding and the coax itself, as you might have a leak.

Old skool, we used to hook CBs straight to the battery and eliminate any other wire junctions. Also, your antenna may not be getting the best ground with the magnetic mount. You may want to try a different style.

My Midland 5001z is working fine, but I think the amplifier circuit for the speaker is shot... can only barely hear anything, and yes I know how to use it properly... the volume just got really really low a few months ago. I guess it's warranty time!

Your squelch stopped working? What do you mean... its allowing static all the time through the speaker?

Check all of your wiring again. To me, it sounds like your antenna isn't connected properly... if everything looks good, your radio may be burnt out somehow - normally due to wiring.

my squelch button will work a little tiny bit, only the first 1/5th of it will work, after that the static goes away and it makes no noise at all.

I just took it all out today, over the next few weeks before the Bundy hill trip with everyone i plan to wire my lights and cb better, ill probably switch CB's and antenna too,if they are indeed the problem.

That sounds like proper operation.

When you say "makes no noise at all" are you meaning that you can't even pick up other people's transmissions?

If you cannot pick up other people's transmissions, your antenna wiring is incorrect. You're probably not grounding the antenna, or maybe your coax cable isn't hooked up properly to the antenna.

Now maybe he means that he can't hear other people because he turned up the squelch to high. Because if I understand it correctly the higher the squelch the more you essentially block out peoples radio signals rendering their calls "nonexistant" to your CB radio.

At a certain point, yes. You need to find that middle ground between static and completely silent - generally it's barely above the point where you hear static.

If you hear static for most of the squelch knob rotation, you need to look over your antenna wiring.

Now i get interference with my cb when my auxiliary lighting is turned on(strobes/emergency lights especially)

Would anyone going to the Bundy Hill trip with me in 2 weeks be willing to take a look at it? i am electronically retarded when it comes to this sort of stuff.
