Cocksided after lift

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by Feets001 » Mon Mar 28, 2016 5:20 pm

I did the 3" mark lift approximately three months ago. All Moog control arms, Bilstiens, tire rods, ball joints, Rancho rear shocks with Moog Z 71 springs. We backed into the shop to mount the spare tire spindle, and we noticed the car was leaning 1 1/2" on the driver side. It was fine when I did the initial lift. Shocks feel fine, and everything looks tight. Anyone got and suggestions? I'm lost here.

That's a pretty good lean, I'd guess a bum spring that has settled more than normal, or you could take that bag of sand outta the rear drivers seat...

Anything look obviously wrong? Is it primarily from the front or rear

This isn't the first time we have heard about a moog spring collapsing is it?

I guess if mine collapse I'll have to buy Radflo's, since I know none of the tire stores near me are messing with my struts again lol.

I'm surprised the Moog one fail like that. They tend to be pretty good for quality. Are the Moog springs made in China? (many of their parts are now :( )

I had not heard of any Moog spring failures around here. I wonder if you contact them what they would have to say about it.

I have a feeling it is a result of over-compression, which can occur due to the design of our spacer lifts. Stock designs have bump stops built in that are supposed to prevent over-compression of the spring, but as we add height to the strut, we are not compensating for the height of the internal bump stops. While we haven't seen a collapse of a coil quite like that, we do often see coil springs "settle" over time, which is a result of yielding of the coil, it just tends to do it more evenly than yours.

I'm no expert, not even a novice, but I now know the 81114 springs are not the spring for the three inch lift. I I stalled the 81112 springs and rode around and was amazed. I no longer get the loud bang of a topped out strut on every pot hole I encounter. I ran out the road to hit a really deep one And it was like butter lol. Got my "go green" paint job started, already 21 bux in.

Did you have any extra frontal weight with the Moog 114? Being they are about the 87/88 range it would be advised to only use them with extra weight as typically advised w 88s.

My 8114's aren't doing any banging and clanging so far.

The only difference in Moog springs is the length though, the rate stays the same on all part numbers.

That may help prevent the higher rate springs from topping out, but it doesn't solve the problem of spring yield. It actually exacerbates that problem.

I was asking about the weight due to this post...

I have the big Harbor Freight winch, tube bumper, and Barton's armor. Strut banged on anything I ran over. Weight didn't help. I can bounce the bumper with the new 81112 springs. I guess that's a good thing.

Well it wasn't the spring. Both coil springs start the coil with the first coil touching the second coil, one side on the outside face, and one touching on the inboard side of the spring. With the 81112 I have 1 1/2" difference side to side. Hey! On the roads around here that makes it level.
