Strut Arm/Yoke Removal

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

I started on my lift this past Friday after work. Per some of the post I commenced with the drivers side reading this was the more difficult of the two sides. First minor issue was removing the upper shock mounting nut under the master cylinder. A trip to O'Reilly's resolved the issue with the correct socket. Next was and continued issue is removing the strut yoke. A pitmen arm puller could not get into the gap begin the yoke. Went and bought a tie rod removing tool...the opening was wide enough to clear the stud. Ran around and also called looking for a wider one. The one place where I could rent a kit, had it out on loan. So this morning buttoned everything back up, as my TB is my daily driver. I went and picked up the kit and will work on my TB next weekend.

standard pitman arm puller from harbor freight should fit perfectly.
Second option, is back the nut off far enough to protect the threads at the tip, and a few hardy smacks with a 3 lb sledge should pop it loose from the taper. But the arm puller is the preferable method.

I used the Pitman Arm puller from Harbor Freight BUT I had to grind down the clamp on it to fit behind the taper.

I never pulled that off when installing my lift. Just removed the bolt where the arm clamps on the strut and was able to pull the whole strut assembly off.

I'm having the same issue replacing OEM shocks. Was wondering how folks got the yoke off the bolt. Also, does the spring need to be compressed to remove the shock?

Apparently this also works, but I've never personally tried it:

another lesson i learned. Deadblows won't work... I whaled on mine for about 20 minutes with a 5 lbs deadblow. Nothing.
Tapped it 4-5 times with a standard carpenter's hammer, poof. Metal hammer is the key.

A 4lb mini-sledge works wonders for tie rods, pitman arms, anything with a taper that needs a shock.

Deadblows are more for maneuvering things about that you don't want marked up
