Ball Joint Press

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

My joints be squeaking pretty bad. Just started this past week. I was hoping they would wait until after the holidays, but luck isn't my friend all of the time. Obviously doing the work myself, but I don't know whether to rent or buy the tool. I love owning tools, but I don't know how useful it will be to keep around. Any of you that have done this already, did you rent or buy? what makes more sense?

I have a set, but prior to having them or in cases out in the field we use two large sockets and a C-clamp.. Up to you if its a possible purchase, I use every excuse I can get to buy tools. Though that comes easy since I do work out of my shop for side money.... "Because babe!! I need it to finish this job, you want more money don't you??" hehe...

My first choice is to borrow an unusual/ limited purpose/ specialty/ very expensive tool the first time I need one of them. Sometimes the person who owns the tool comes along and helps with the work! (Yes, beer is usually involved.) Sometimes I learn having the tool is not what I want -- I still have to be able to use it and want to use it again. If the first use went OK the second time I need that tool I usually buy one, figuring I needed it twice and there is no telling how many more times I might need it. Then I become the guy people borrow the combination left handed flux capacitor puller/ muffler bearing alignment tool from and I get the free beer!

The corners of my garage and the backs of the lower drawers in my tool boxes are littered with perfectly good tools that only do one think on one particular motor vehicle and that machine has been gone for almost as many years as you are old. In addition there are obsolete tools such as fuse pullers for cylindrical glass fuses and ignition point files and carburator syncronizers.

Renting (or renting w/ all your money back when you return it such as from Auto Zone) might be the best of all worlds for specialty tools, especially if your budget or storage is limited.

Being fond of tools and having convinced yourself you NEED another is going to trump any advise I give.

I guess realistically I do not need it, but I love adding tools to the collection whenever possible. But I can rent the tool for free(essentially)....or use a c-clamp, rigid pipe coupler, and a couple small pieces of steel I have to get the job done. I suppose the holidays are not the best time to go on tool spending sprees, and I want to get these done before it gets too cold. Maybe I should try the makeshift, since the parts store is only a few minutes away, and go for the rental if MacGuyvering fails me.

I love playing MacGuyver! It looks really cool to everyone else and if you get the job done more power to you.

:dj: ridiculous.

I'm going to put my own press together and hope it works. Everything seems to be sizing up just fine.

So hows the build meet idea sound? We can do fluids and seals for you and mario, my body lift and whatever else we encounter.

I think it is a fine idea. If only we can get some attendance commitment this time. I understand it being hard to justify driving on dirt, but routine maintenance should have no excuses!!

Hey, at this build meet, are you guys going to document the things being done? Sort of like the 'Featured Articles' on the OS.

Or will it be more of a Budweiser and BS meet?
