Front Springs Moog 81114 or 89s ?

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by snowmirage » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:27 pm

I plan to rebuilt my front suspension to fix a minor issue soon, I will be replacing my rear springs with the ever popular Z71's as they have started to sag quite a bit.

I figured I might as well replace the sagging front springs while I'm at it.

I will soon have radiator and oil pan skids up front but a full front bumper is not going to happen anytime soon.

Any thoughts as to whether I should give the 15125889 springs a try, or the moog 81114 springs ? I think I have read nearly every thread I've found mentioning either, as you know there is little known about the moog springs and I don't recall finding anyone running the 89s with out additional weight on the front end.

From what I can gather the 89's may be far to stiff without the additional weight of a bumper / winch up front.

Tough call Brandon. I'd suggest winging it with the 89s I guess. We can always cut down some of the coil if you find your truck topping out all the time.

I found a few random places that mentioned the 81110 moog springs having a spring rate of 375

http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,carcode ... pring.html

That puts them between the 85's and 86's according to my math

spring N/mm lb f/in
1 5.71
1 5.71
881 50 285.5
882 53 302.63
883 56 319.76
884 60 342.6
885 63 359.73
886 67 382.57
887 70 399.7
888 74 422.54
889 77 439.67

I would guess the 81114s are either the same or slightly stiffer.

I was searching around the other site and came across a comment from someone in the classified section

http://classifieds.trailvoy.com/showpro ... 5283&cat=4

"Fyi 89s without weight in the front will top out."

So that's a shame :( if its true

v7guy I read through your build thread and see you have them on there with the 3" lift, have you looked to see how much down travel you have? if any?

The V8 is all aluminum And weighs the same as the I6... Stock front springs are the same...

I see no downside. Gives you incentive to get a bumper and winch and maybe put your hilift out front to really use the 89's. :excited:

After installing the Moogs, I think they are performing similar to the 89's. Can I add weight to the front...aka.my 360 lbs...measure the change in fender height and someone calculate what they are?

Logically that makes sense, but I think you would have to work out a way to convert the change in height at the fender to change in height at the spring

Could be wrong its late and I haven't given it much thought yet

True Brandon, plus the lever arm effect of the LCA and angle of the strut further complicate the matter. Regardless, the resulting height change in the spring would likely be fairly minimal and difficult to measure accurately. Therefore the accuracy of the resulting spring rate would be fairly poor.

After trying to make a decision over the last few weeks I finally took the plunge ordered the Moog 81114 springs

$45 each shipped on ebay can't beat that.

I'll be sure to take measurements and such before and after when I get a chance to get them installed

should probably read through this thread so you have a rough idea what you may be in for. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3283

Doesn't appear there's much extension at all lol
My new shock just came in about an hour and a half ago.

Well looks like I screwed the pooch..... :wallbash:

So.... when I ordered these from ebay I'm 100% sure it said "spring" and not "springs"! So 1st off I now have 1 extra set... (at a very good price mind you $45 for a set of springs shipped?)

then I just to look why i was missing ~$45 from my account and it seems I double clicked something in the payment section on the 2nd auction and ended up with 3 sets of springs!

Guess I'll put them up in the for sale section hopefully someone can use them.

Get me ID, OD and length measurements on those springs. I know a guy with a home fab buggy that MAY be able to use your two extra sets. He's been using (and flattening) XJ coils.
