Rear Shocks

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by HARDTRAILZ » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:09 am

I am looking for an alternative to the bds rear shocks. Mine have blown out already. Anyone actually used or are using another brand? I am hoping to find something with a decent price and do not need remote or other high end because I don't do fast offroad. Just something with the extended length and that wont blow out so quickly.

One of mine is seeping as well. I think this may be due to the fact that they are designed to be compressed a little more at rest/on road use than we have them.

Piston + fluid closer to outer seals all the time = accelerated seal wear maybe?

I looked at some XJ rear shock relocation brackets. They'd give a little more overall extended length and put the at rest position back closer to where it was designed to be. They are $40 at the local 4x4 shop. I just need to get over that way to buy some.

I hear ya kyle, mine blew out maybe a month or two ago. Haven't replaced them yet, as I don't know what to replace them with... They were nice for the first 4 months, but now are toast.

Seeems bds needs to step up their product. They definitely lost me. I can't reccomend them. Prolly need to post on both sites that they have issues and find an alternative to direct people to. I hate that I have told several people they are the best option when the the product fails so often and quickly.

I like my buddy's rough country and he has a good contact there so hopefully I can find something from them to work. They replace their stuff if it fails. His coils settled in the rear of his jk and he got all 4 new coils shipped to him for free. No bullshit. Just sent pics and they stepped up and took care of him.

Yea I was happy with them up til now, this just has happened so soon, I can't say that I'll replace them with another set from BDS unless they are longer..

If ya find anything out from Rancho let us know, I'll be looking for some replacements soon, and I'm looking for the same as you... decent price, extended length and I go slow offroad.

I'd think it a damn shame if you guys have this discord with BDS and not have their Rep as a person involved in this issue. They are a Vendor here and should answer to these problems. This is three members a vast amount of offroading for this group and little time on these components. This is not a warranty issue it's one of compatibility.

It may very well be compatability, but it is obvious there is a problem with them on our vehicles.

The BDS shocks for our platform are designed to go with a 2" lift on our stock springs. Most of us haven't seen a stock TB rear spring in some time... add to that, the 2" of lift using spacers. The shocks are not designed to handle the added spring rate and extra lift we've put on our vehicles. You can't fault the company on that... if you want to get on them for anything... get on them for not having as wide a selection for our platforms as for others.

They list the shock specs on their site... perhaps it could be of use to you, though, looking for a replacement.

SHOCK ABSORBER SPECIFICATIONS: Part #55619
Raw Cylinder - 5266
Extended Length - 25.95
Collapsed Length - 15.42
Body Diameter - 2"
Top Mount - EB1
Bottom Mount - EB1

i have had ranchos since the spring and no problems. i think the 5000 series, bin a while. but i had to put spacers on either side of the lower shock to take up space.

Do you know the part number? I may order some rough country today to try.

I can't say anything bad about BDS... I'm using a shock that's designed for a 2" lift in a 4"+ lift scenario. I'm a little foggy on where the bad feelings are coming from.

At less than $50 a shock I'm not about to complain... BUT, I'm interested in fixing the problem...

I don't have really bad feelings but they just don't work for several of us. I don't want to recommend them or dis them, but find a better more reliable option.

I don't like the z71 coils either and am looking for replacements there as well.

What I don't want to see is the bds shocks being tossed out as the best option for the rear. They may work for some but are not for everyone so I am looking for something else.

after looking at the specs the bds have an inch or more than my ranchos at full extension:bds 25.95 rancho 24.655. check out the rancho rs5114 they offer 26.625" at full extension just so you dont fully extend the shock on quick ruts and stuff. they look like they have the same mounting.

I like my BDS shocks but their NO FINE PRINT LIFETIME WARRNTY says:
No Fine Print Warranty
If you are the original purchaser of any BDS product and it breaks, we will give you a new part. Period.
But the shocks are not covered under this warranty? Are BDS shocks not a BDS product??
I understand that shocks are a wear product, But the big print warranty says any product... :wallbash:

Just to through this out there—You guys changing to 86 & 87s in the front what shock package are you changing to when you make the switch? When they fail at least no one now runs BDS in the front right? Have any of you sent a PM to the Rep for BDS? He may have some answers rather than a whole lot of guesses.

I would like to know a good shock for the front too, BDS doesn't make a front shock for our truck.
