Coil Boosters?

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by Henry05 » Thu Aug 12, 2010 4:23 pm

I did a search to see if anyone has discussed this before and couldn't find nothing. Does anyone here know anything about coil boosters? They are only like 8 bucks at auto zone and they say it will give your front end a lift of about 1 1/4" to 1 1/2". All I want to do is level the rake. I hear good things and I hear bad things. Has anyone have any experience with these on a trailblazer? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Superior-Automotive-Spring-booster/_/N-25by?counter=6&itemIdentifier=541219_0_0_

Very dangerous... they essentially render an entire coil of the spring useless. Generally it leads to faster spring sag and could cause spring failure if used long enough.

8 bucks.... those are garbage.

IIRC someone did something similar/exactly like that on the OS I can't find the thread but that's almost as bad as the "kuwaiti death trap".

I'm pretty sure my uncle said he ran those in his Tacoma but they were total garbage so he went with the spacers. After working with the springs when installing the lift there's no way I'm sticking anything between the coils.

Yeah, better save up some money

Wasn't that about the dude from Kuwait who has a 2WD Envoy and tried to use those things to lift it like 4"?

He had taken a 2WD and lifted it 4" with a home-made outside the strut spacer - mistake #1.

Their method of fixing the upper ball joint angle so it could be aligned was superheating the steering knuckle with a tortch, then bending it with a hammer - mistake #2. If anyone knows about metals... that's extra dangerous because it ruins the tempering of the metal.

Just an overall death trap.

Straightening the front spindles helped the alignment. My mechanic straighted them the first time and I think thats why we were getting really bad alignment issues, so he used Kuwaiti laws of physics (By the eye) and bent them so the spindle gave a good enough alignment...

Here's the post
http://forums.trailvoy.com/showthread.p ... uwait+lift

And he had those coil boosters for only one day or something, as they seemed too dangerous.

You missed the pic where they cut the spacer and then welded it to shorten it.

After everyone ridiculed his engineering efforts it all kind of went away. I don't remember ever seeing another update from him anywhere.

I know it's the running joke around here, but honestly that's kind of sad. He's just a guy who had a goal and was trying to figure a way to achieve it. Mind you, he did it the incorrect way. But how many crazy ideas have we come up with here recently?

I dunno. I never saw the thread on the OS, but I respect the guy for having the balls to try.
