Front Shock Dimensions

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by Trail X » Tue Aug 10, 2010 10:26 am

If someone has a front shock laying around, can you post some of the dimensions off it?

I'm looking for:
  • Overall max extended length
  • Distance from lower spring perch to top of threads
  • Piston rod thread size (where the bushing mounts)
  • Length from piston rod shoulder to end of threads (length of the bushing mount zone)
  • Length of the threaded portion at the tip.
  • Lower mount diameter
And any other you can get.

Maybe even a picture of the bushing mounting zone of the piston?

I figured someone out there has a shock laying around and it would be easier for them to get the measurements.

UPDATE:
I was able to confirm that the Bilstein HD top thread is M10x1.5mm.

Regulator was able to determine some of the main dimensions of the front shock:
Regulator1175 wrote:Here is the best I can come up with, without having it in front of me and able to measure myself. I hope these are accurate.

27 3/4"• Overall max extended length
15"• Distance from lower spring perch to top of threads
• Piston rod thread size (where the bushing mounts)
2 1/2"• Length from piston rod shoulder to end of threads (length of the bushing mount zone)
1 1/2"• Length of the threaded portion at the tip.
1 3/4"• Lower mount diameter

I, err, umm.... have some 88 springs coming with my 4WD parts.

So I'll have my struts apart soon. I'll get whatever you want.

I've got a stock front laying in the carport... Be late tonight or tomorrow before I can get measurements though.

I'm not sure if it will work yet. And if it will, I'm not sure when I'm going to have time to try it out. I don't really like crying wolf.

I hope it is a means for more articulation! Lift is nice, but articulation is nicer.

It's got to have something to do with using a longer shock in conjunction with the stiffer springs.

Quick question.....If I were to say, lengthen the shock by an inch or two from the top mounting bolt (through the use of those Shock Stud Extensions)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UF5DQI/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000CPJMC0&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0SZTTRS5JNT3XJ2D1WVV
Image
This would ultimately allow the LCA to articulate/droop an inch or so lower than before, I'm assuming I would end up running into the CV tripods being maxed out if I used these in conjunction with my larger springs, correct?

Not directly trying to :hijack: highjack your thread but I figure you could use the information as well as I could.

That's essentially what I was looking into... but I hadn't seen pre-made ones before.

I like being right. I also think this would be a very good way to max out the front suspension without overdoing spacers. Longer shock body + 89s + small spacer = 3"+ lift with better articulation? Maybe so

Yep, that's where my mind was at... kinda creating an outside the strut spacer with an inside the strut spacer, which would allow the 89s to sit just right.

I have the original shocks (the black Bilsteins), but they're in Prescott, so I can't do anything till I get there on the 23rd
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

Two concerns:

1. Will lengthening just the shaft of the strut cause the strut to excessively bottom out under compression?

2. Should we be looking at sourcing longer springs to compliment this, instead of stiffer springs with the same uncompressed height?

I believe our struts are a metric thread... 10mm perhaps.

Those shock extensions would have made life so much easier when installing the heavier springs on Kyle's truck last week. It was a huge pain in the a** to get them compressed enough to get the upper mounts re-installed.

I have a loose shock, but am 6 hours away from home and wont be back until next week. Let me see if I can get someone to run over there and get the measurements for me though.

One more thought.

The Bilstein HDs have a substantial amount of thread on the shaft. I'd say there's a good 3/4" of extra thread coming out of the tops of mine (from memory). You could add (grade 8) washers to the base of the threads to achieve the same effect as buying an extension. If you believe my measurements then we only have about 7/8" of working room before the CV tripods complain anyway.

I understand what you are trying to do, but is this actually safe to do? I mean sure you will be biting quite a few threads, but quality of material used in those extenders would be my main concern.

I would personally just look into making a mount or finding another aftermarket shock for another application that'd allow us a longer spring/shock assembly. I don't see why you'd mod the assembly when you can just substitute in another shock/spring combo.
