Biggest Tires

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by BornToBlaze » Thu Jan 21, 2010 12:37 am

I have a few questions about tires. I know some will be dumb but, whatever...
1)I was wanting to know whats the biggest sized tire I could get before I need a lift or a spacer's.
2)Also, what does the three separate numbers mean when im lookin at a tire for example,( ---/--/--)
3)Whats the best tire for a daily driver, and the weekend warrior?

You just opened the Can O Worms..

2. ---is width, the -- is percentage of width which is the height, and -- is the size wheel the tire fits

And to answer your third question:
I would think that all/terrain tires would be your best bet for daily driver/offroad freak.

Several people have had good luck with the BFG AT and the Goodyear Silent Armors.

Unless I got them almost free, I would never run anything but an MT. If you are gonna go offroad at all, they will make your life easier. I dont see any real onroad advantage to an AT except some road noise, but I love the howl of big swampers, so the lil bit an MT puts out is nothing. Heck mine are so quiet I barely hear them.

I run the Goodyear mt/r kevlar tires. Dont be fooled or mis informed. These are not strictly a mud tire. The MT = MAXIMUM TRACTION The R = Reinforced

So as far as I am concerned these are about as agressive as the A/T tires get. For a cheaper substitute, you could try the Goodyear Authority. A little less aggressive then mine, and a little cheaper.

Basicaly, you need to talk to people who live in your area, and have tried a few different tires. Ask them what they think, or go to your local tire shop and see what is a common tire for the 4x4 guys.

Its all personal preference. But without a lift, spacers, or new wheels, your not gona get huge tires on these trucks. Go read our build threads and see what we had to do to make our set ups work. that would be the best place for you to get a lot of info very quickly.

Also, I am shocked Roadie hasnt come and burnt this thread to the ground hahahaha.

I should have told you about the Duratracs from Goodyear. They are a great all around tire. They drive good, wheel good, and are reasonably priced. I know several people that swear by them and I really have not seen them fail on or off road.

The wheel spacer sticky kinda touches on this subject: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=26... a good thing to read none-the-less for a noob.

To make it simple for you, the best tire size guideline is, as HardTrailz said, 30.5". You can fit most any tire 30.5" diameter or smaller with a stock setup. Once you go larger than 30.5", you will need spacers and a lift. Once you go past that, it will all depend on your backspacing and tread width.

Just a little fyi... I'm running Discoverer S/T's, sort of a hybrid at/mt tire, and they work great everywhere I go, without too much road noise. Excellent in rain as well, which some mud tires suck in due to lack of siping.
