Wheels question

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by TBLAZER_02 » Sun Jun 04, 2017 1:11 pm

I'm looking to pick up a set of Thunder rims and they come in 2 options

1 is a 17x8 offset 20 bore 78.1 ... the other is the same with an offset of 40.

My question is will either of these rims with the offset they have make it so I don't need to have a wheel spacer.

Thanks for the help

No, you need less positive offset. Factory offset is +40 I believe. 0 offset would be about 1.5". You'll most likely have to get something custom drilled for that though... that's what I had to do.

You need at least 0 offset to run oversized tires without spacers. I went -12 when I did it.

I'm currently running -12 offset 17x9s, with 1.5" spacers and 35x12.5 tires.ImageImageImageImage

Dang, looks awesome Mason! I'm glad the rigs back on the road. Would you be able to measure the clearance you have between the tire and balljoint for me? I want to upgrade to 33x12.5 next time I get tires, was wondering if my rims have enough offset to clear the balljoint

Yes, I've got about 4.5" total suspension lift and another 3" of body lift.

And Ricky, the ball joint clearance is about 2", just remember I'm running -12 offset wheels AND 1.5" wheel spacers.

Yes! My rims are -12 too so In theory I should have about a half an inch of balljoint clearance left with those tires

How did you manage to get 4.5 inch of suspension lift I always thought our Max was 3 ... I'd love to get a set of 35s on there but I think I'm going to end up on a 33

4.5" in the back is possible. Maybe closer to 4" in the front. That's what mines like anyways. You get an extra inch from the stiffer springs

You an get about 4 front if you eliminate all downtravel.

For ball joint clearance calculations, I hate dealing with offset, since there is another variable - wheel rim width.

Calculate the backspacing of the new wheels, and make sure its less than 5". 4-5" of backspacing is pretty much ideal. Just keep in mind if you get super wide tires on a narrow rim, you could also run into the ball joint, as it is also a variable.

The option you mentioned with an 8" rim and 20mm offset comes out to ~ 4.8 in of backspacing (check my math). If you're running a 265 or 285 width you should be ok, but you're getting close. Get up into the 305 and you might have issues. Depends on the margin of error that you're comfortable with making a decision on.

Definitely agree with using BS not offset. but you can use this to see how changes affect things if you know offset and width.

I think mine was actually raised around 3.75", but I like telling people that its raised 4". I round to one significant digit ;)
