Question about 33's

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by 02_chevy » Thu Apr 10, 2014 7:26 pm

Alright so i know there have been a lot of threads on here and i know about the tire/lift chart but i want to clarify a couple things before i go spending money on new tires. My current setup is bds lift with 88's in the front and z71's in the rear and i want to know what you guys think would be a good tire size for a DD that goes offroading quite a bit. Ive been looking at the general grabber AT2's in a 285/75/16. I know there is some trimming that need to be done but will they prevent me from flexing or will they rub while on the highway if i hit a big bump. Just want to know from other peoples experience what tire size they would choose with my setup.

Thanks for the Help i love this site!!! :flex dirty:

Id get 32s. They are much easier in MPG that 33s would be. I'm running the Grabbers an they are an awesome tire for the money(just wished they offered a 285/70-17)!! With my current setup(Marks 3" Lift, 265/70-17) I'm getting about 17mpg.

well the 285/75/16 is a 32.83 which is .12 bigger then 285/70/17 so you think i should go with that size?

It's not about size. It's about the mission. Mission dictates everything, including tread style. It also helps you settle on a rim diameter, which drives aspect ratio, which is part of the discussion if your intended mission involves airing down.

Have you researched or articulated your mission yet?

That you're asking about ATs means you're aiming at a different mission than many of us, where MTs are the target tread pattern.

And anything under 1/2" difference in diameter can be ignored because different styles of tire with the same "nominal" size are never going to be exactly that diameter.

I'm gonna be on the beach a lot and mudding a little, I want to go with 16x8 steelies. I have had an xj with 33's bfg MT and they're not the greatest on Long trips which I plan on taking so AT are the tires I'm looking for

I was suggesting the 265/70-17(the 16" rim equivalent) which is 31.7" round it up to a 32". Roadies post sums it up pretty well. I do however slightly disagree with Roadie on this

Here are my 2 cents. Just because you wanna run a A/t doesn't mean that your mission is all that different. I.e. I'm running The Grabbers and have done some fairly intense wheeling. I been to Drummond twice and haven't had an issue with traction with the Grabbers. Drummond Island is THE hardest place to wheel in Michigan thats not a Offroad Park. I have write ups posted about the 2 trips. I'm going out on a limb to say that, I feel that a good A/T is just as capable as a M/t. Will I be going to a M/t in the future yes, why cause Grabber doesn't offer(like I said) a 285/70-17, and for the price of their 33x12.5x17 I can get a good M/t for cheaper.

All in all what fits your mission it what will work for you.

You go to 16x8 steelies n I doubt a 285 will clear. Rory has 285 w similar lift but on stock wheels.

Why wouldn't they clear with a 16x8 w/ 4" backspacing??

You move tires out from under truck n they get into fenders easier. I had 17x8 w 265 70 17 and with only similar suspension lift as yours... they rubbed even with some trimming.

Guys run that size on stock wheels all the time cause they are under the body and miss the fenders.

I'm planning a 1.5" adapter to run factory Tahoe/Silverado wheels and 265/70-17s with MarkMC's 2.5 lift... any rubbing on the fenders there? I've read up on here and know that it will clear inside, just wondering if that would too little offset and cause rubbing on the fenders

What gears do you have? If you have 3.42s you better re-gear before going to 33" tires.

Less offset seems to keep rubbing to a minimum if using spacers.

I had no issue w 3.73 and 33s. Did add a trans cooler after noticing higher temps in mountain driving, so you might want to do that.

I have a trans cooler from an older car that i plan on installing soon. I see youre running 16x8 w/ a 4.5 backspacing, as far as flexing goes do you have any issue?
