LT or P

Ok. My lift is in and some new BDS shocks too. Mark is shipping my spacers tomorrow. Time for tires. Its a mild build and the vehicle will still be 90% road driven for the time being. I am going with a 265/70/17 General Grabber AT2. But... that tire is offered in a heavier, tougher, snowflake rated model and a lighter 60,000 mile warranty P type. What to do?

It all depends on you I suppose.

-Do you tow?
-How aggressive is the off roading you do?
-Do you like a stiffer ride or perhaps a little bit of a softer ride?
-Is there a price difference between the two? If so can you justify the extra expense?
-Do you drive in the snow a lot?

Personally I would go with the LT tire because the perks that come with it such as higher psi, higher load rating, more plys (typically), and softer rubber fit my needs so I can justify the extra cost.

Someone else might want a softer ride, spend less money, and have no need to tow or have more plys. Pick what suits your need best.

Depends on your needs. If you are doing little to no towing and very little off roading the P type are generally a bit cheaper and last longer. You may also want to ensure that you are getting the same tread pattern on both types. Generally the P type have much less aggressive tread. If you tow and plan on hitting trails it's LT all the way.

P is passenger car.

LT is light truck.

I certainly would not consider this platform a car...esp when asking on a site dedicated to offroading them.

The P tires on our trucks are wearing out too quickly at my work. I'm forcing the company to switch to LT tires for anything bigger than a station wagon. (yes, the 72yo millionaire owner of my company drives a 12yo station wagon)

I did mine about 8 weeks ago. We need to put together a wheeling trip this summer in our area. I haven't seen much on here for the Bluegrass state.

LT, no contest. LT tires have thicker sidewalls and tread carcass, with more plies. This makes them much more resistant to sidewall punctures and such. The first time I went to TECORE with P-rated Destination AT tires, they preformed really well, traction-wise, but I popped one sidewall, and 1 other one was through the cords, but still held air from the rubber on the inside of the plies, and just barely got me home. I've had these 10-ply BFG AT tires off road I don't even know how many times, and the only punctures I've had in them are nails, and 2 of those didn't even go all the way through the carcass, and didn't leak.

Are those the wardens from treadwright that you have on your TB?

Im pretty sure he has BFG ATs. Im running the same tire and love them. Not Great in mud or deep snow when compared to aggressive mid tires but they serve me very well on a DD that I expect a lot from.

I actually had General Grabber AT/2's in 245/70/R17 and put a lot of miles on them. You want to make sure they are LT's and they weight about 40lbs each. Great tire, highly recommended by a number of folks here. They perform well in multi-weather conditions, on the highway and offroad.

The ones on my TB are actual BFG AT. The ones that I had on my Cummins were the Wardens. They were pretty decent, but they wore fast enough and the real BFG AT last long enough that I think the per-mile tire cost is about the same, if you keep them for the full life.
