I really like my new 17" wheels. I think with the style I chose (a bit city but I'm building an SS) it makes the wheel seem bigger than 17". Many factors! Color, width and diameter all have to be thought about if you're buying new wheels.

I'd say go for 17s. Especially if you are planning on upgrading your brakes like the others have said.

since 17 is legal in a lot of places and 16 is jailbait I'd go for 17. Why take the chance?

Kyle, that is crazy, since you would think there is less rubber in a 17 vs a 16.

Guess I'm bringing this thread back to life. I'm sort of debating on keeping my 17s or going to 16s in the 285 tire size. The reason is the 285/70-17s are a bit more expensive than the 285/75-16s and there are fewer tire options in the 285/70-17 than the 285/75-16s . I know its personal preference and so on and I know that if I go to 16s upgrading brakes will not take place. So what is everyone's thoughts?

It's all about budget (do you have to buy 16" rims and perhaps adapters if you change bolt pattern?) and your mission (do you go on trails that demand that you air down and you would benefit from the added flex of aired down sidewalls of the higher aspect ratio 16's?). Only you hold the answers to those questions. I needed the performance, so I went to 16's (American Racing Mojave teflons)

There is not enough difference to allow one to really notice a difference in performance of 16 vs 17. The sidewalls are so close it wont matter. If you are really worried about sidewall flex or want to say you have maximum sidewall...go 15s.

I am curious what tires you found in 16 that are not available in 17?

I probably could benefit "added flex of aired down sidewalls of the higher aspect ratio 16's seeing that I will be going to Drummond most every year. But as you said it'll cost more with rims and so on.
Kenda Klever MT comes in 285/75-16 and not 285/70-17 thats one that comes to mind, along with the Grabber At2 Its 33x12.5x17 no 285 in the 17, 285 is only offered in the 16.

Kenda seems to make a good tire for cheap. Surprised they don't have a 17.

33 n 285...like 315 n 35 are typically considered same size so a company wont make both usually. Just pick which they think will sell better and make them.

I'm still thinking about going down to 17s just because of tire selection and still being able to clear ext brakes, but there isn't anything wrong my factory 18s (other than being too big for my liking) that I can't justify buying rims.

I looked into those for a few minutes until I realized they were made in China, and were sort of cheap, and I couldn't take the risk that they were CCC.

Was looking at their web site and everyone of their tires look to be knockoff copies of other tire designs for example the AT look loosely like a Firestone destination AT with half the thought put it the tread.
