The transmission cooler is built into the radiator. So if you think about it, your radiator is doing double duty. If you're towing something, you're really heating things up. So it makes sense to add the additional cooler, this way the engine temps and transmission temps stay lower.
Also when you move up in tires it's generally a good idea to add the cooler as the additional rotational mass means a little more work on the drive train.
I'll add to this, that off-roading around Moab on 90 degree days, we saw some really high engine temps that got me worried a couple of times. The engine wasn't reaching an over-heating state, but anytime where where trying to climb altitude in the heat it really started climbing. So this year we finally got around to putting our transmission cooler on the truck.
Once lifted 03 Trailblazer on 35's, gave it up to travel the USA with my family.
