Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Fuel can mount built*!*

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by Zero » Tue Dec 29, 2009 3:27 pm

Hey guys, i finaly finished my fuel can carrier for my truck. it is mounted just under my high lift mount, behind the spar tire. it is made entirely out of steel, and welded on. it tilts down with the tire so that i can still open my lift gate. it really isnt that heavy at all.

I installed it the day before my cross country drive from toronto ontario, to los angeles california, and no problems to report!

things i want / will change:

1. Make fuel carrier bolt on and off.
2. Adjust placement / shape for a tighter more elegant look
3. Make a built in locking device to hold the can down instead of using those damn ratchet straps.
3. Add mounting points to carry rope, or clip extra gear to
4. Add second fuel / water carrier
5. re powder coat
6. In closed position, everything should be tighter to the truck. Reduce play in joints.
7. clean up wiring for additional license plate light
8. Add antenna mount for cb radio
9. Add mounts for rear facing lights
10. Add rear view camera

i know i dont have pics up, but I hopefully will get to take some new, high quality ones when i meet with Roadie, so stay tuned.

You know how we roll here dude... I usually wait until I can get pics uploaded and then post about my mods... got enough nagging when I did it the way you do. I do appreciate your eagerness to share this all with us, and I'm really looking forward to seeing your mods.

Does the unit tilt down to open the hatch? Will the glass open with it in place?

You work at a prison? :raspberry:

Yes everything tilts down to open the lift gate. and it is not as heavy as one may think. it works out really well. and yes, the glass can be opened without tilting anything. you only have to tilt to open the lift gate.

I am not sure what it was originaly. i bought it from AlekG, after he did some mods, and I have sorta just gone crazy with it. hahaha :drive: I do plan on selling it rather soon. This was really only meant to be a temporary mod. I have been using it to build measurements and ideas for my swing gate tire and fuel carrier i have been designing.

I want to bring everything closer to the vehicle, remove as much play as possible, cut the weight by using aluminum, or re thinking mounts ad what not.

all in all, it has done a great job and served its purpose. im just never satisfied and know i can make something better now that i have the list of changes and info i need.

Yea I hear ya. I want to figure somethin out myself, but I really want a swinging carrier, but not as bulky as the Hitchgate and also have the tire as close to the rear as possible.

But that does look pretty nice for the time being, I must say. Nice work.
