Didn't you try to sell it for like 600 since they can't be found?

Moots hasn't really tested his, the lsd has been used in some fwd cars and some syclones that hit the strip and it's apparently fairly robust, but there's not a ton of info on it.

yeah, I listed it just in case someone wanted it worse than me.
Nobody wanted it so I installed it.

So I've been thinking about this little project, mostly about how the actuator works and how to control it manually. I figure I'll grab an actuator, well, three actually, and I'll wire it in with my TCCM to get rid of the dash light and the flashing switch. One of the other two I'll sacrifice to the four-wheel gods by gutting it and seeing if I can run it continuous duty controlling it by a switch. I figure this will burn up the solenoid itself but it may not. If it doesn't burn up, booya, Occam's Razor, install it and go wheeling! If it DOES burn it up, well, back to the drawing board, wire up a logic circuit controlled by a momentary two position switch (engage and disengage).

If THAT doesn't work, then I'll get a plunger solenoid and figure out how to mount it.

The problem isn't the actuator. The problem is that the slider-ring, side gears, and shift fork aren't strong enough for the kind of pressure that a welded diff will put on them.

Ah, now this is useful info.

I assume that hardened or stronger units aren't made.

Dammit world, you've got me again.

I guess that even if I decided to do this against all odds, I'd need to only use it in mud. Turning in 4wd without the disconnect activated would only cause a bind with driver side wheel and the rears right?

It was worth a shot.

if you're going to go through all this trouble why not do something that's an upgrade? how about making a rear sump oil pan and throwing a Colorado front differential under there, you can get an ABR air locker for them. you will have to make custom CVs though.

<revive thread>

Do not weld your front diff. Nothing on the GMT360 is strong enough to survive that. The locker was hard enough on things. I can show you pictures of mangled tie rods and a disconnect housing I split width wise from stress. Welded fronts steer horribly and break things even in solid axle applications.

The 7.2/7.25 carriers in the S10 are compatible with 360 front diffs. The internal shoulder width is the same (which is why Lockright's fit) and the exterior dimensions are also the same. An LSD replacement carrier would work just fine. I wish they were available when I was still doing the 360 thing.

:hijack:

I am looking for info on lockers and researching. So just a quick question if you don't mind...

I have LWB 3.42 gears, but with XL version my understanding is that I have the bigger diff housing (10 bolt 8.6???). I use it for sand dunes and some mud mostly. I do notice the open diff's front and back when climbing a hill in sand. Left front and rear passenger only ones pulling when loosing traction.

So question: What would you do? Should I get a locker for the rear diff? Thought?

Yes, and, lucky you, you don't already have the G80, so you can have a real locker.

Agreed! You can get a Spartan Locker or Lock-Right for around $300 (As Mike said - a lunchbox locker). And the plus side is, if you don't like it, there no gearing setup - just pull it back out.

For me, I have the G80 and my buddy quickly reminded me that my new 4.56 gears will likely blow apart my locker on my first outing... My options for lockers start around $800  . So I decided to go with a full spool for $150 :thumleft: It's not my daily driver so I'll deal with scrubbing tires!

Craig, thank you so much for putting the hay down where the goats can get it! LOL

So finally a positive, I am going to look these lockers up todsay and order. So I take it I just have to drain and pull diff plate. Install in position and close backup. Fill. Is that all? Got the sorry gear 3.42, so may look at axle swap down road, but plan to beat this diff a bit more. Not my daily either.

Ha no problem! Yup they are fairly simple to install. Here's a quick video for the Spartan locker install. He's doing it with the axle out, but you can easily do this with it still in the truck.
