03 trailblazer sas/4wd conversion

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by Codyj92 » Fri Jun 05, 2015 11:45 pm

I have an 03 trailblazer that I'm wanting to swap over to 4wd with a straight axle conversion. Would it be easier to run a divorce case that is manual shifted or swap in a 4wd trans and case and computer? Opinions needed please! Vehicle is in my mothers bankruptcy so it isn't going anywhere lol. Thanks in advance

Manual shifters are more reliable to me
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

I'm with Kyle, I'd rather have something that's simple... ironically enough. Go with the shifters.

Shifters even a dual case setup I just don't see a whole lot of room under there for a divorced case setup. If your on a budget with your build I'd stay away from a Divorced case setup.

Not really a budget just trying to figure out the best way to do it. Mine is 2wd and I'd have to change to a 4wd trans and then deal with electronics involved in the swap.

That's my biggest concern is if I'll have to change the transmission. If I had enough room for a divorced case then it shouldn't be a problem but idk if I do. Guess I need to get under it and look

The way I see it is you have a speed sensor on a TC If you don't have a TC where is the sensor? And will putting a TC in mess anything up? Also is that xmission able to accept a TC?

where is the speed sensor on the 2wd? In the trans tail housing? If so its stay in the same stop and just be calibrated to the gear reduction that comes with installing the tc.
My biggest question is with installing the tc will it mess up any of the electronics with the extra gear reduction.

I know there are a ton of sensors on the case that I had to unplug lol I'm sure its probably in the tail housing of the xmiasion. Post up a few pictures of your xmission. I'm curious to see.

Caleb, admittedly, I was being a bit facetious, I chuckled, so frack it. LOL

The tailshaft housing is the only real difference and you can swap that out without much headache. In the 2WD 4L60E the VSS is in the tailshaft housing while in the 4WD 4L60E it's put on the transfer case.

You can get the transfer case adapter for $50-$60 on ebay and then slap the transfer case of your choice on there.

The 241 comes to mind as the easiest swap since the "late" models have the appropriate VSS hook up. I think 95 and up if I remember correctly.

The computer will need to be programmed for the 4WD and the low range. From my understanding it's relatively simple. But I ain't ever done it.

Ok I'm gonna talk with a few local tuners and see what they thank about tuning it. If I can get a tcase and new tail housing I'll be set

It's a common issue trying to get shift points right with low range. I'm not sure how that will factor in with either set up.

Cody, looks like a clean platform to start with. I'm glad to see someone taking a 2 wheel drive as a starting point for a SAS. I've suggested that for the SS guys. Nobody has chose to spend that kind of cash yet.
