Sweet.. Any info you guys come up with, I'd be interested to dig into

OregTrailBlazin wrote:I've personally done a few toyota's... I've found the Cherokee front axle seems to be the closest fit, if I were to use a full 44, I would replace the rear to match. I figured for myself I would want it fairly small still, no more than 35" tires. So teh 35 out of a cherokee would be fine with upgraded axles. If you made a new oil pan, utilizing the space taken up by the axle going through, it could be lower profile, allowing for more upward travel. Which I think is key to this project.... Hit me up anytime, I think you have my number, if not, I can PM it to you.. I've done a bit of looking into this idea!

Yes, the rear would also get redone as we don't have much travel, articulation AND I'll be stepping up a bit in gearing: 4.88's would be about the minimum w/ 35's and hauling a trailer.

Good point on the oil pan and what not. Up travel is important along w/ good bump stomps.

I liked how this guy SAS'd his Xterra.

However, your biggest challenge will be below... the steering.

I'm also curious how much the custom drive shaft will cost. Are our transfer case connections at all standard?

May the force be with you, Teebes.

Driveshafts are not expensive in the grand scheme of it all. If you can find a longer than needed with the right ends, it is cheap to get cut shortened and balanced. Lengthening is more expensive by far.

I think mine for my suburban were done for 3-400 for both.

Another good thread reference, thanks. That will be very similar to the eventual setup, 3 link up front, longer control arms rear, etc. Steering is the biggest unknown in my mind. Luckily Neil has done this kinda work before

I love the way that X is set up. If you end up going that route, I'd love to find out how much Neil charged you for everything, so I can start saving pennies.

You better hit up the nearest Country Club parking lot and hand out business cards Phil, if you're going that route with your truck. Pennies won't do it.

I just scanned the linked thread James/Teebes. Did he take it out much or is it just a toy?

My impression was it was his toy... that he took out a lot. The reason he's SASing it, is that he broke "too many A arms". If that doesn't scream that he used it, I don't know what does.

Do you have any idea how much money is involved with this type of operation? Is this a mod that will be competed by a offroadtb.com member? Or is it another snorkel idea. :poke: :raspberry:

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it but who has the balls to do it? Or the money. I doubt any of us. At least no one with both or the know how and done right. :(

Don't think it's that far away, Some have their rig already paid off. There are people doing this to their brand new Tacoma's pretty often. I think its only a matter of time!!

It's the next major mod on my list, after the bumper is knocked out. I've been digging on pirate4x for a while now, just need to finalize the suspension numbers, order parts and oh yea - make sure Neil is signed up depending on his availability.

I'm heading out to Moab this year for Easter. Not sure it will be a reality before then, but fingers crossed.

I hope to sell lots of Cadillacs to afford it... that should do the trick.

Money is the only hold up. I will definitely be doing it, but I figure next winter spring in all reality. Mine is not paid off and I have not had it a year yet, but I will do it without hesitation if someone gives me 3000. Maybe I will get lucky and glip another house this summer if the market picks up.

Well three out of the four of you where the guys I thought could really pull this off. One of you has the resources, another has drive like no other and one just has big balls. You guys work together and it may happen. Now, back to the question. How much will this set up cost? Teebes, you got a ball park number?

I was told about 2500, but cant recall if that included axle or not. Axles are not that expensive if you look around. My 14 bolt full float and dana 44 were 400 for the pair and the 14 got all new brakes and the 44 was gone through more extensively, but not that bad really.

We might as well start putting a real parts list together:
(front only):
Bump stops: FOA: 300 (pair)
Coilovers: FOA: 1000 (quoting 10" remote 2.5 coilovers + springs)
Axle: Old Dana 44 500 (price really differs, say 500. Ideal axle would be high pinion)
Axle shafts ???
Gear: ~500
Locker: ~700
Steering: ????
3 link tube: 200
Johnny joints: 500-600 (yea, not cheap)
Custom front drive Shaft: 400
Stock for custom mounts: 50

Those are pretty vague numbers, but that's over $4K already and you're not even talking about labor yet.

Don't forget, you'll be wanting to do work to the rear in order to level out the vehicle. New axle or not, you'll be needing new springs and rear control arms at the least.

And new gears, I'm sure you don't want to do all this work to stay with the same gearing..

Right.. Everything escalates from there (new axle for the gearing, suspension, etc).
