They've had that 12k winch on sale for most of the Summer, and I eyeball it every time I get a new catalog. I just can't decide if I'll ever have a *need* for a winch, other than pulling someone out of the snow. My poor baby is gonna get demoted back to mall-crawler if I don't at least get up to the mountains sometime this Summer. :(

I can verify it works well, had it for about a year and a half and used it several times. Never been covered and it's been exposed to the elements all this time.

the funny thing is my dad recently built a trailer to haul his tractor on and the occasional car. He was showing me his 9k Badlands winch he bought for it. He was a little disappointed when I told him they usually have the 12k on sale cheaper than the 9k :-) Then he said "well I can double it and pull 18k".

He should be more than fine with a 9k winch. Pulling a broke down or not running piece of equipment onto a trailer does not require the pulling strength we often need in recovery.

oh yeah, he's not worried about having enough winch.
I think he only had a 4k on his last one.

For some reason this made me imagine hooking up a winch line to an overhead bridge, and picking up the entire truck. I guess that would be a *real* test of the bumper mounting bolts...
