Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

2005 Tahoe Lifts, Brakes, Tires and other?

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by CoastieMike » Mon Jun 30, 2014 6:11 pm

I've got a 2005 Tahoe that I will be Lifting, upgrading brakes, tires, putting 4.10 gears in and some others fairly soon just asking for some input from y'all since I haven't done a lift or anything for close to 7 years now.

What I know I want to do,
Lift: 4 inches
Tires: 33s (Maybe MTRs?)
Gears: 4.10
Brakes: ??

I'm not sure which brand or type of any of this to do. And I would like some advice along with my in depth googling. Thanks!

It's going to be ten years old so I want to replace everything anyway. Thanks again in advance.

Hey Mike, while I'm glad to have you here, you will probably find more information taylored to Tahoes elsewhere. I think we have one member here with a Tahoe, and he hasn't been on in years. This forum is mainly focused on Trailblazers. While they are both Chevys, we don't really share anything else in common.

You lie!
I've seen inside a Tahoe, it too has a steering wheel, as do we! :finger:

Lifts vary between vehicles. It's not so much the company, but often the specific design that makes a lift better or worse.

Tires, goodness, most anything will be fine. Just don't go with retreads.

Gears - Nitro or Yukon seem to get a lot of play. Or if you're just doing 4.10s, just swap in some stock gears from a wrecked Tahoe.

Brakes - I tend to remain with A/C Delco, but I've had good luck with Duralast ceramic pads too on a GM.

when you get a chance, fill in your location so we will know where you are.
I'm just guessing you are in FL, if that is the case just sell your Tahoe and buy the TB from MikeKey :-)

I am pretty sure my retreads kept up with you just fine. I have always been happy with my Treadwrights, and they have a pretty decent reputation on this forum as well as many others.

I've seen a lot of sentiment against them, here included: http://www.forums.offroadtb.com/viewtop ... =14&t=5256

Much more opinions against them then I've seen against any other tires - except maybe the goodyear kevlars early on, but it seems goodyear has gotten them under control.

So I see Kyle's review, which is perfectly understandable. He and I have talked a lot about this and I understand where he is coming from. I see a couple of negative comments from band wagon jumpers that have no actual experience with them, and I see a positive post for them as well.

As for my experience, I had great customer service and a good product. My first set of tires started to show side wall cracking at the seam (could be why they are doing bead to bead casing now) in the first year on two tires. I called them about it and had 5 new tires shipped to me in 48 hours. When I asked what they wanted me to do with the original set they said they didn't care and told me to just sell them. I got about 50k miles out of the replacement set and was still able to resell them on Craigslist for a couple hundred dollars.

I will not argue against anything Kyle had to say there, because he is correct. However, I still stand by the fact that they did everything I wanted them to do. The noise wasn't an issue for me because I don't drive with the windows open. There performance was good, and I never really had an issue getting stuck that could be blamed on the tires. While they may not fit Kyle's mission, 90% of the members on this site do not even come close to having the same mission. For the cost savings, for what is in reality an aggressive AT branded as a MT, they can be a good option for those wanting to watch costs.

Sorry for going off topic.

Good input. As I said, I was just basing it off of some more recent comments that I've seen popping up. That was just one recent thread that I found. I can't make a personal judgement on the tires, but I'm personally leaning away from them due to what I've been reading. I'm glad you've had a good experience.

CoastieMike is the other cracker that joined me and Cody_S on the Rain-O-Rama trip in GA last year.

I redirected him here because we're the smartest people in the world. We know just about everything.

I never did think about him buying MikeKey's rig though... Hmmmm.

he's up in GA right now. But he does have quite a few years of Alaskan adventure experience.
