Every thread is an ORTB chat thread these days.
Once lifted 03 Trailblazer on 35's, gave it up to travel the USA with my family.

Less San Diego county too... I think Bill is hoping for beach front property in Vista!

On topic I need to get to work on a storage system for my truck, about to buy a car this week and upgrade the TB to TOY status!

Colorado is awesome... I live in a densely-populated area, but I can drive half an hour and be deep in the mountains. Within an hour I can be lost on forest access roads. Two hours (including frequent stops) will put me over the continental divide. I love being close to my technology, but if I really need to, I can take a detour on my way home from work and get lost. </brag>

Regarding the thread... really love that bug-out trailer! I wish my wife liked to go camping. Always thought it would be easy enough to make the back of the TB into a comfy bed, but with the idea of adding the simple trailer for storage, I may just be able to convince her to go out into the wilderness.

My storage area has always been lacking. Currently it is just the spare tire and some open top bins with misc. gear. The biggest concern I have is safety in the event of accident. last weekend I picked up some supplies to hopefully remedy this. Hope to get it done next weekend and post the results for discussion.

My result from last weekend was failure....

The idea was to use a piece of wood with slots cut in it so the factory tie down points would slide through. I was then going to bolt more tie down points to the wood. So basicly I would have a piece of wood covered in anchor points which would be secured the truck using the factory anchor points.

Failure occured when the wood was thicker than the height of the achor points, and don't think thinner wood will hold up.

Maybe if you cut big enough holes in the wood, you could still hook your straps through the wood...

EDIT: I like the concept. If you find a way to make it work let me know.

This would take more work to assemble, but could you build your platform out of layers of plywood? What I'm thinking is that you build the thickness of the bottom layer until you can *just* slide a 3/8" rod over the top of the plywood, and through the factory tie-downs (one long rod on each side, going front-to-rear through two tie-downs). Then add a 3/8" plywood layer, with slots cut for the rods to slide through, and add another solid layer over the top of the to completely enclose the rods and factory tie-downs. You can insert and remove the 3/8" rods from the rear, and dress up the ends with handles that would be out of the way, and you would still have your overall thickness in wood for your additional tie-downs.

Remove the factory hold-downs and just use their threaded holes. Use any length bolt you need.
