That blows chunks considering how fun it was to take out the front.

Well. Sounds like the salvage guy is owning up to the mistake. He's checking his inventory now for the 4.10s. I'll upp date as these events continue to unfold. This is dirtybacon reporting live from somewhereflat, fl for Ortb news.

At least since you always insist on doing things the hard way, the rest of us get quite the educational experience from you! :salut:

This is why you're an SME, right? Because you do everything twice and post about it so we know how it's done!
The problem with the Trailblazer is, people think you know what you're doing.

It should be a little easier this time though and it should be easier to get lots of pics. You'll probably cut at least a couple hours off the R&R.

Despite all that though it really sucks... a lot.

Well, I dont know what the plan is. I got sick of hanging around waiting, so I just told the shop owner to call me when a decision is ready for my approval.

Thanks man. Is there a way to see if the front diff from the rear axle's vehicle is available?

Oh, One productive thing I did accomplish today was opening the old front diff to try and see what happened. here's my discovery...

Aside from the MIA outer bearing race and the 10 inch long crack... the case appeared to be the only damaged part.

The spider gears, ring gear, and pinion gear looked awesome! I was kinda dumbfounded....

But then I saw this......

So what I'm thinkin is the pinion bearing was going out, coupled with the water intrusion and lack of gear oil is finally what pushed the case apart. The crack, clearly, goes all the way through the metal. Thoughts? Or is that what fish was talking about with "pinion walk"?

I'd bet the crack was from a high rpm wheel spin followed by a slam onto some rocks. The jolt would produce a very high load trying to separate the gears. I'm guessing that you're right, the wear on the carrier is from shot bearings. Is there any axial play?

Bacon since you have to remove the front diff again you should add a locker while you are at it, I don't recall you doing that before.

HA! You have good ideas, but bad memory. I stated in the first post of this thread that I didn't want to put in a front locker. A) because it's another few hundred dollars B) FL is not WORTHY of front lockers C) Don't feel like working on my front end every couple trips cuz shit breaks. I'll start with the rear locker. Learn it's ways. then maybe some day when I have my own garage and spare car, I'll consider a front locker.

To James: There is very little axial play that i can feel with bare hands. Just a little clicks worth of shimmy. (how ya like them backwoods units of measurment?!)
